West Lynn Pop Warner in title game

Matthew Roy

December 10, 2014 by Matthew Roy

The West Lynn Pop Warner A squad is a win away from claiming a national championship after its 36-6 win over San Jose on Wednesday in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The Rams will face Ward 5 (Washington, D.C.) on Friday at 3:15 p.m. in the Midget Division II title game, the Rams? third such berth since 2009.
?Our defense was very good again (Tuesday),” West Lynn coach Maurice Cordy said. “We started out a little choppy (on offense) but settled down nicely and played well.”
Once again it was Alphonso Robinson who led the way offensively for West Lynn. He rushed for three touchdowns as the Rams? ground game was unstoppable.
?Our style is ground and pound,” Cordy said “If they can?t stop it, we?re going to keep doing it.”
The Rams fumbled on their first drive and then muffed a punt moments later. But San Jose couldn?t convert the turnovers into points.
West Lynn scored late in the first quarter and early in the second on Robinson touchdown runs to take a 12-0 lead into halftime. Ishmael Bangura scored early in the third quarter and it looked like the runaway was on at 20-0.
San Jose, however, drove right back down and scored before the Rams responded with another touchdown drive to make it 28-6 and put the game away. Prince Brown added a fumble return for a touchdown to complete the scoring.
?We were able to respond after (San Jose) made it a game. That kind of took the life out of them,” Cordy said.
The Rams beat Chino, Calif., 36-6, on Saturday in their first game of the tournament. They will face a Ward 5 team that has been nearly as dominant in their two wins in Florida as the Rams have been. Cordy knows it will be a battle.?(Ward 5) has legitimate speed and good size. It will be a good test for us,” Cordy said. “We?re playing with a team that?s lost seven kids through the season. So we?re playing with a team that we didn?t think was going to be starting. It goes to show that all the kids needed was an opportunity.”
