One goal was all the Lynn/Winthrop girls hockey team needed in its season-opening 1-0 victory over Peabody Saturday at Larsen Rink.
Sophomore Gretchen Howard picked up right where she left off last season, stopping all 11 shots she faced while counterpart, Lauren Hennessey, was spectacular in her own right, making 32 saves for the Tanners.
“They’re two of the best goalies in the league and both played phenomenal games,” said Bulldawgs coach Anthony Martucci, who was thrilled with his team?s defensive effort as well.
“Gretchen didn’t face many solid chances, so that’s a credit to our defensemen. (Senior captain) Kasey Harris played a great game along with (junior) Gabby Kenniston and (sophomore) Megan Chavis.”
The home team grabbed the lead 1:26 into the first period on a goal from senior captain, Annie Mahoney, set up by junior Olivia Shkliew.
Lynn/Winthrop is at home against Masconomet Tuesday (6).

At Ed Burns Arena in Arlington, the Spartans played well in a season-opening loss, but failed to break through on the scoreboard. Eileen Flynn and Juliana Dolan scored first period goals for the Cougars before Jessica Piracini added a score late in regulation.
Sophomore goaltender Brittany McPherson made 25 saves for St. Mary’s, which travels to Archbishop Williams on Wednesday.
Beverly 3, Lexington 0
At Bedford, the Panthers got multiple-point efforts from three players, including Caitlin McBride and McKinley Karpa who had a goal and two assists apiece. Anna O’Neil added a pair of helpers for the victors who got the game-winner from Kristen McCarthy late in the second period.
Madison Jalbert made 14 saves for Beverly, which is at home against Andover Thursday at Salem State (7:30), a game that will be played in honor of the late Danvers High teacher Colleen Ritzer.
Fenwick 3, Shawsheen 2
At McVann/O’Keefe Rink in Peabody, Caitlin Carney’s goal 1:07 into the third period held up as the game-winner despite a comeback bid by the Rams, who got two goals from Katilyn O’Shea.
Amanda Blanchette and Megan McGunigle tallied for the Crusaders, who racked up a 28-9 advantage in total shots.

At Timberlane, the Eagles (3-0) opened the season with a sweep, including their first-ever win over Timberlane in 10 tries. St. John’s had five wrestlers go perfect on the day.
Doing the honors were Malcolm Mitchell at 113 pounds; Michael Dik, 126; David Yepez, 170; Ian Butterbrodt, 220 and Jay Carnevale, 280.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Everett 69, Saugus 51
At Everett, the Sachems dropped their season opener to the Crimson Tide, who got a game-high 17 points from Gary Clark.Saugus’ Evan DeCristoforo scored 10 points while David Rowinsky pulled down eight rebounds. Lamarr Jones added seven points for the Sachems, who play at Marblehead Tuesday (7).
