Freshman Marnelle Garraud and the St. Mary?s girls? basketball team understand the importance of a strong first impression.
On Monday night, the first-year point guard scored a game-high 21 points for the Spartans who received team-wide contributions in a season-opening 73-31 victory over Catholic Central League rival, Matignon, in Cambridge.
?The whole team came to play tonight,” said St. Mary?s coach Jeff Newhall, whose team jumped out to a 26-7 lead after one quarter of play before going into halftime up 47-13.
Garruad and Temi Falayi (15 points, 12 rebounds, six blocks) combined for 28 points in the opening 16 minutes of play.
?We got off to a fantastic start and played with a great pace which allowed us to avoid any first-game jitters,” said Newhall. “Defensively, we were able to bother (Matignon) with consistent pressure which created plenty of fast-break opportunities.”
The Spartans held the hosts to 10 points or fewer in all four periods.
Mia Nowicki scored 10 points for the Spartans who got 15 points combined from Kayla Carter and Olivia Nazaire, a freshman. Amanda Idusuyi (six points) hauled down eight rebounds in the victory.
