The Swampscott girls? basketball team made coach Katelyn Leonard?s first regular-season game as coach of her alma mater a good one. The Big Blue got 14 points from Megan Hartman as they held on to take a 46-42 win over Gloucester.
?We stressed defense the whole game,” Leonard said. “And it was nice to be able to win in my first game back.”
Swampscott led 23-16 at the half before the Fishermen cut the lead to 32-31 after three quarters.
Revere 67, Classical 22
At Revere, the Rams (0-1) were in an 8-8 tie after one but were outscored 43-11 over the next two quarters as Revere put three players in double figures. Chenysse Hill led Classical with nine points. .
?We had a pretty good first quarter and handled their press pretty well,” Classical coach Tom Sawyer said. “Those were the positives.”
Lynnfield 54, Manchester-Essex 46
At Manchester, the defending Cape Ann League/Baker champions got going on the right foot as Emma Mancini scored 20 of her 25 points in the second half to help hold off the Hornets. Mancini also pulled down 12 rebounds.
Fellow senior Toni Dicesare chipped in 14 points for the Pioneers.
Winthrop 59, Danvers 37
At Winthrop, Niki Tsiotis had 13 points and 12 assists while fellow captain Kristen Siscamanis added 12 points as the Vikings (1-0) led from the get-go.
Marblehead 60, Saugus 33At Saugus, the Magicians (1-0) pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Saugus 26?-8 in the period to clinch a convincing victory. Though the game was still in reach at the half for Saugus, Marblehead’s Jenny Norcross lead an offensive charge that buried the Sachems.
