Hockey: Revere, Lynn fit to be tied

Matt Fraser

December 18, 2014 by Matt Fraser

The Lynn Jets boys? hockey team will have to wait at least three more days for its chance to break into the win column after settling for a 1-1 tie against host Revere on Wednesday evening at Cronin Rink.
A solo effort from Lynn’s Owen Sedille knotted the score early in the third period before Patriots goaltender, Maxx Anderson (35 saves), made sure that the deadlock held up, stopping Jets forward Kyle Morrill on a penalty shot with 3:00 remaining.
?Both goalies played strong games tonight and gave their teams a chance to win,” said Lynn coach Joe Conlon, of Anderson and Jets goalie Jack Stafford, who finished with 19 stops.
?It’s never easy going into Revere and earning a point, never mind a win. This was a hard-fought game from start to finish but there’s still plenty of room for improvement.”
Patriots coach Joe Ciccarello shared similar views.
?Lynn is strong up front so Maxx knew that he had to be at his best tonight,” Ciccarello said. “Both he and Stafford stood on their heads. It’s always an absolute battle when these two teams get together.”
Following a scoreless first period, Joe Ristino gave Revere the lead 2:38 into the second session, finishing an individual effort.
Lynn (0-1-1) hosts Somerville on Saturday (8:30) while the Patriots head to Bourne to play Holliston in the opening round of the Canalmen Tournament on Friday (6).
Peabody 1, Winthrop 1
The Tanners opened their season with a strong showing at Winthrop. Alex Anzuoni gave the Vikings (2-0-1) a 1-0 lead in the second period before Ryan Carney scored the equalizer with 2:43 remaining in regulation. Aaron McDonnell made 26 saves for the visitors while Winthrop?s Ray Feely finished with 41 stops. Peabody hosts Saugus on Saturday (4).
Gloucester 8, Swampscott 3
Gloucester took an early two-goal lead and cruised to an 8-3 win at Talbot Rink. Ryan Cresta scored twice and Mike Johnson added a goal for the Big Blue (1-1). Swampscott returns home on Saturday to play Salem (12:30).
Beverly 8, Saugus 1
The Panthers got a pair of hat-trick performances from Ted Leathersich and Brendan Boyle who each finished with an assist, as Beverly beat Saugus, 8-1. Ross Wahl and Hunter Spencer added tallies for Beverly, while Clinton Cabral had three assists. John Torres scored his first varsity goal for the Sachems, assisted by Ryan Groark.
Danvers 6, Marblehead 3
At Rockett Arena, the Falcons handed the Magicians their first loss of the season.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Archbishop Williams 2, St. Mary’s 1The Spartans played well, putting 30 shots on net, but couldn’t find an equalizer in a scoreless third period, falling 2-1. St. Mary’s (0-2) cut a two-goal deficit in half late in the middle session on a tally from sophomore Adara Nazarian, assisted by junior Katie Terban. Sophomore goaltender Brittany McPherson made 16 saves for the Spartans, who host Arlington Catholic on Saturday in their home opener at Connery Rink (6:30).
