Depth will be a key piece to the puzzle for the Marblehead boys? and girls? track teams this season and the asset was on full display in dual victories over visiting Swampscott.
In boys? action the Magicians prevailed, 67-19, behind a bevy of first-place finishes, including Mitch Norcross, who qualified for national competition with a high jump of 6 feet, 2 ? inches.
Other winners included A.J. Ernst in the 1000 meters (2:43.7), Adam Linski in the two mile (10:44.3), Jaason Lopez in the 55-meter dash (6.8) and Dan Marino in the shot put (45 feet).
Rounding out the individual victories for the hosts were Jakob Wikar in the 300 meters (40.2), Oliver Jacob in the 600 meters (1:32.8) and Jeff Stern in the 55-meter hurdles (8.6).
Swampscott (1-1) got a win from Jack Dennehy in the the mile (4:53.1).
On the girls? side, a 64-22 win for the Magicians, Marblehead got wins from seven individuals as well as the 4×400 relay squad.
Anna Barrell (12:39.6) and Emily Kauffman (6:08.7) took first in the mile and two mile, respectively, while teammate Chloe Ferrucci’s throw of 30 feet 3 ? inches was best in the shot put.
The Magicians also received wins from Carlyn McGrath in the 55-meter hurdles (8.8), Olivia Eddy in the 300 meters (45.9), Kat Huber in the 600 meters (1:48.6) and Holly Rowe in the 1000 meters (3:33.4).
For the Big Blue (0-2), MacKenzie Faulkner’s time of 7.6 seconds won the 55-meter dash, while Michelle Connor took first in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet 8 inches.
Both Marblehead squads improved to 2-0 with meets at Danvers on Dec. 30 up next.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Minuteman 65, Tech 53
The visiting Tigers (0-2) put three players into double figures but they had no answer for Minuteman guard Josh Atkins, who finished with a game-high 31 points.
Jahvon Van led Tech with 17 points while Michael Anaya added 15 and Steffan Gravely had 10.
?This was a step in the right direction,” Tech coach Dave Leary said. “We played really well.”
Tech plays again tomorrow afternoon (1:30) against Bishop Fenwick in the inaugural North Shore Basketball Classic at Salem State.
Salem 65, Revere 53
It was the Bryan Martinez show as the visiting Witches (2-0) got a game high 27 points from the guard/forward. The Patriots (0-2) had three players in double figures, led by 15 points from Romeo Thomas. Camilo Gomez and Tommy Chea chipped in 10 points each for the Patriots.
WRESTLING
Saugus 48, Marblehead-Swampscott 18
At Saugus, Mike Haskell recorded a first-period pin at 113 pounds for the combined team. Max Bazarov was the other winner for the visitors at 145 pounds via a first period pin.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Beverly 4, Andover 2
The Panthers (2-0) broke a 2-2 tie with goals in the second and third periods from Kristen McCarthy and Caitlin McBride to get the win at Rockett Arena in Salem.Beverly had taken an early lead on a McKinley Karpa goal before the Golden Warriors rallied to lead 2-1. Izzy Primack?s goal late in the first tied the game at two.
BOYS HOCKEY
Shawsheen 5, Fenwick 3A four-goal first period by host Shawsheen Tech was too much for Bishop Fenwick (1-1) to overcome. Matt Townsend, Mike Gallant and Jimmy Moore each had a goal with Greg McGunigle adding two assists.
