STOW – Three Peabody firefighters graduated Friday from the Career Recruit Firefighting Training Program at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy.Mark A. Eliuk, John P. Marotta, and Justin J. Sauvageau graduated as members of the 221st class of the firefighting academy 45-day training program. The men were among 24 graduates, all men, representing eight fire departments across the state.”Today’s firefighters do far more than fight fires,” State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan and Deputy State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey wrote in a press release announcing the graduation. “They are the first ones called to respond to chemical and environmental emergencies, ranging from the suspected presence of carbon monoxide to a gas leak. They may be called to rescue a child who has fallen through the ice or who has locked himself in a bathroom. They rescue people from stalled elevators and those who are trapped in vehicle crashes. … At the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy they learn all these skills and more.”
