The St. Mary’s swim team decisively knocked off Marian, 85-42, Sunday at the Lynn YMCA in its first meet of the season.
Coach Michele Brewster’s Spartans got a fantastic performance from Eve Smith, who won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:07.78, which qualified her for sectionals. Smith was also part of the foursome that gave St. Mary’s the points in the 200 medley relay, alongside Bami Rodriguez, Gabby Marchesse, and Erik Whitcomb, clocking in at 2:13.69).
Other winners for the Spartans include: Eve Smith, 200 individual medley (2:27.03), Erik Whitcomb, 50 freestyle (26.69), Erik Whitcomb, 100 freestyle (1:04.75), Erin Johnson, 500 freestyle (8:15.28), and the 200 free relay (1:56.46).
Additionally, the female members of the St. Mary’s squad qualified for sectionals in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:59.82.
The group that lead that effort included Gabby Marchesse, Bami Rodriguez, Maggie Carroll, and Eve Smith.
Brewster was happy to open the season with a win.
?We have all new swimmers,” Brewster said, “and they all had excellent time’s. It was a great meet for us, overall.”
St. Mary’s is 1-0 and next swims on Jan. 7.
WRESTLING
Lynnfield at Lisitano Tournament
The Pioneers wrestling placed fifth in the 15-team Lisitano tournament held at Wakefield High School Saturday.
One of the powerhouse programs in the Cape Ann League, Lynnfield saw seven of its wrestlers place in various weight classes. In the 113-pound, Joe Morse finished fourth. In the 120, Andrew DiPietro finished fifth. Max Whyman was third in the 126; Zach Blacker was fourth in the 132; Lucas Pascucci was third in the 138; Dominic Monzione was second in the 145; and in the 285, Brandon Troisi finished third.
Finishing ahead of Lynnfield were Catholic Memorial (first), Methuen, Arlington, and Reading.

The Eagles swept their quad meet to move to 7-0. The big win was over Franklin, which beat The Prep by a single point to win last years dual meet state championship.St. John?s had nine wrestlers go perfect on the day: Sam Little at 106?
