There are some new faces wearing Beverly colors this season, but some of the Panthers? familiar ones came through in a big way Saturday.
Clinton Cabral scored twice, including the game-winner on a power play with 4:49 left to go, as the Panthers defeated Marblehead, 4-3, to win their fourth straight Cape Ann Savings Bank Tournament championship at Talbot Rink in Gloucester.
Beverly (3-2) had to work to clinch its title though. After Cabral’s second goal of the night gave his team a 4-2 lead with 5:11 left, the Magicians (2-3) answered back with James McCarthy’s goal at 12:51.
Marblehead then had a 2-man advantage in the final minute with the goalie pulled but the Panther defense did the job to seal the title.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead early on Ross Wahl’s rebound goal before Nate Witherell tied it at 10:49. Cabral gave Beverly back the lead at 12:08 of the first with an unassisted tally.
Neither team scored in the second before tournament MVP Ted Leathersich scored early in the third for a 3-1 lead. Marblehead cut the lead back to one on Braden Haley’s power play goal but Cabral’s second goal, also on a man advantage, proved to be the winner.
Pentucket 4, Gloucester 4 (SO)
At Talbot Rink in Gloucester, the Sachems rallied from two goals down in the third period to forge a tie in the consolation game of the Cape Ann tournament. Eddie Mahoney; Tyler Parisi; Ben Favazza and Ethan Brennan each had a goal for the Fishermen (2-1-1).
Watertown 5, Swampscott 1
At Ryan Skating Arena in Watertown, the Big Blue (1-3-0) got a first-period goal from Ryan Cresta but it didn’t hold up as the Middlesex League power scored five straight times to take the win.
Louis Olivieri and Mike Johnson each had an assist for Swampscott.
Trent Gallagher had 26 saves for Swampscott, which is back on the ice tonight (8) against Lynn in the first round of the Lynn Jets Christmas Tournament.
Everett 5, Revere 3
At Everett, the Patriots (1-2-1) had a 1-0 lead after the first on Richie Polignone’s goal but saw the hosts rip off four unanswered second-period tallies to take control.
Anthony Cecca’s pair of third-period goals cut the lead to one and the Patriots had a power play with the goaltender pulled in the final moments but Everett scored into the empty net to put the game out of reach.
?We showed that we didn’t want to quit,” Revere coach Joe Ciccarello said.
Salem 4, East Boston 1
At Porazzo Rink in East Boston, the Witches (4-0-1) got a hat trick from Mike Gillis to take the title game of the East Boston Deep Freeze Tournament. Former St. Mary’s goalie Nick Holt was named the tournament MVP.
Matignon 3, Fenwick 0
At Stoneham Arena, the Crusaders (2-2) outshot the hosts, 27-18, but couldn’t convert on several quality scoring chances. Stephen Young had 15 saves for Fenwick.
Acton-Boxboro 2, Danvers 1
At The Edge in Bedford, the Falcons (2-1-1) had a 1-0 lead on a first period goal by Rob Buchanan but saw the hosts fight back for a pair of second period goals that stood up.
