The Marblehead boys? basketball team came up just short in a 91-86 overtime thriller with Reading on Monday afternoon in the finals of the Saugus Holiday Tournament.
Regulation time ended in a 77-77 stalemate before the Rockets survived a late flurry of buckets from Bo Millett who scored all nine of the Magicians points in the extra session to finish with 21.
For Reading, Mike Algeri provided the dramatics, scoring a game-high 38 points, including a school-record eight three-pointers.
The Rockets made 15 three-pointers as a team.
?It certainly wasn’t because of a lack of defense,” said Marblehead coach Mike Giardi who lauded his team’s aggressive attempts on shot blocks.
?We were contesting their every shot but they were finding ways to score and they deserve all the credit for doing so.”
Marblehead’s Cian Saunders (17 points) hit a three-pointer of his own with 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to tie the score before the Magicians narrowly missed at the buzzer.
Angel Perez duplicated Saunders output in the loss while Teddy Bostley added 11.

Dan Bertrand, Evan DeCristoforo and Lamarr Jones scored nine points apiece for the Sachems who lost in the consolation game of the Saugus Holiday Tournament.
The hosts were held to just three points in the opening quarter, which they finished trailing by 12. David Rowlinsky and Justin Winn scored six points each for Saugus while Jamison Coughlan poured in a game-high 22 for the Hurricanes.PREP 91, ST. CLEMENT’S 57
Four players scored in double figures for St. John’s in its victory at the Boston Amateur Basketball Club Holiday Tournament. Harry O’Neil led with 18 points for the Eagles (3-1) who got 16 each from Spencer Danforth and Kareem Davis and 10 from Tyson Johnson.SALEM 64, MADISON PARK 49

Masconomet Holiday Tournament
In the championship game, Masconomet held off Bishop Fenwick in overtime for a 57-53 victory.Beverly beat Reading, 53-32 in the consolation game of the tournament in Topsfield. The Panthers jumped out to a 10-0 lead before cruising to victory. Jess Cross scored a game-high 15 points to earn all-tournament team recognition. The Pioneers led 7-3 at halftime before host Gloucester rallied in the second half for a victory, led by Julianna Costanzo who finished with eight points.
