The Lynn English swim team relied on strength in numbers to earn its first victory of the season on Monday morning at the Peabody YMCA, 93-73, over the host Tanners.
?Mostly everybody was able to make it today after we swam shorthanded our last time out and it made a world of difference,” said Bulldogs coach Lisa Trahant. “Every individual factored into a great team effort.”
The Bulldogs got first-place finishes in seven events, including a sweep in the 50-yard freestyle.
Sophomore Emma Trahant touched first with a time of 30.37 before freshman Devin Curley (33.06) and sophomore Kylie Moorehouse (33.08),
English (1-2) earned 13 points in the event.
?It was only the fourth race so that allowed us to get off to an exciting and strong start,” said Trahant.
Prior to the sweep, the visitors had a top-two finish in the 200-yard freestyle, won by Frances Serwicki (2:29.85), just ahead of sophomore teammate Daria Fabrizio (2:35.40).
Serwicki factored in on two relay wins in the 200-yard medley (2:10.56) and 400-yard freestyle (4:25.50), along with Marina Broufas, Matt Bruno and senior Jesse Freeman on both relays.
Freeman also took first in the 100-backstroke (1:10.33) and second in the 100-freestyle (59.59). Bruno, a junior captain, added a first-place performance in the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.35) and a runner-up finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:28.84). Broufas took second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:25.03).
Junior Danielle Carney placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (6:13.31), ahead of Fabrizio (7:30.28).
For Peabody, sophomore Conor McCarthy was a double victor in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard freestyle while senior Nina Pappacostas (100-yard breaststroke) and junior Paige Hayward (diving) added top finishes for the Tanners.BOYS? TRACK
Swampscott 61, Saugus 25
The Big Blue (2-1, 1-1 Northeastern Conference/South) won five individual events, sweeping three, to easily dispatch the 1-2 Sachems.
Taking first places for Swampscott were Barry Tevrow in the shot put with a distance of 44 feet, 6 ? inches, Colman Donovan in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.0 seconds, Jordan James (55-meter dash, 7.0), Bennett Smith (mile, 5:28.4) and Pat Doucette (two miles, 13:12.7). Saugus? wins came from Angelo Bellia in the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches), Alex Kotkowski (300 meters, 40.7), Guilherme Barbosa (600 meters, 1:39.8) and Nick Monaco (1000 meters, 3:02.0).Gloucester 72.5, Winthrop 13.5
The Fishermen (3-0, 2-0 NEC/South) dominated from start to finish in winning all but one event. Taking the wins for Gloucester were Noah Hiller (shot put, 46 feet even), Lucas Struppe (55-meter hurdles, 9.0), Jared Marshall (55-meter dash, 6.5), Dan Carpenter (300 meters, 40.9), Kyle Manley (600 meters, 1:31.7), Kyle Frost (1000 meters, 3:17.3), Matt Ciaramitaro (mile, 4:55.9) and Everest Crawford (two miles, 10:56.8).GIRLS? Swampscott 52, Saugus 30
The Big Blue?s (1-2, 1-1 NEC/South) depth was the difference despite four event wins by Saugus (0-3, 0-2). Taking wins for Swampscott were Mackenzie Faulkner in the 55-meter dash (7.5), Bailey Shorr (300 meters, 47.5), Taylor Gateman (600 meters), Miranda Nocera (1000 meters, 3:37.9) and Isabella Kornitsky (mile, 6:24.4).
Saugus? victories came from Gianna Filaretos in the high jump (5 feet), Ailyn Minaya (shot put, 31-5), Dianna Reach (55-meter hurdles, 10.4) and Emily Monaco (two miles, 14:39.3).
Gloucester 48, Winthrop 38
A sweep in the high jump was decisive for Gloucester (2-1, 2-0 NEC/South), enabling it to hold off the Vikings (1-1). Winning for Gloucester were Sierra Rudolph in the high jump (4-10), Jillian Oliveria (55 meters, 8.4), Gloria Kabulo (300 meters, 47.3), Caroline King (600 meters, 1:46.1), Carly Curcuru (1000 meters, 3:20.8) and Sabrina Marnoto (mile, 6:19.1).Winthrop?s wins came from Brianna Campbell in the shot put (22-9 ?), Carly O?Keefe (55-meter hurdles, 9.5) and Kristen Ford (two miles, 14:13.5).
