Stick-to-itiveness has been, and will continue to be, a major factor in how Lynn Tech’s basketball team views its season, which has begun with seven straight losses. The latest was a 58-43 defeat at the hands of visiting Chelsea on Friday night.
?I continue to see plenty of positives, night in and night out,” said Tech coach Dave Leary, who is rapidly approaching the half-way point of his first season on the Tigers? sideline.
?We moved the ball, as a team, much better than we had been and it translated into an extremely tight contest after three quarters,” said Leary, whose team trailed 42-26 heading into the final period.
The Red Devils outscored the hosts, 16-7, over the final eight minutes, thanks in large part to an increase of pressure from Tech’s smaller defenders, which allowed for a bevy of “home-run passes and tip-ins,” Leary said.
Offensively Tech was led by junior guard Michael Anaya who scored 16 points. Fellow junior guard Jahvon Van and sophomore guard Aquemini Gaston scored nine points each in the loss.
?(Anaya) is coming off a bout with strep throat so his legs weren’t there. which is understandable,” Leary said. “I think if he had been fully healthy, he would have went for a lot more.”
Gaston, meanwhile, was tasked with shutting down Chelsea guard Eric Flores, who scored 14 of his game-high 21 points in the first half. Victor Corrales added 14 points for the visitors.
?(Gaston) did a great job on Flores in the late stages, limiting him to just eight points with full-court pressure,” said Leary, who lauded the defensive efforts of junior Justin Lewis (15 rebounds) as well.
Tech (0-7) will look to turn the page on Tuesday evening against Whittier Tech in Haverhill (7).
