Girls Hockey: Strong second pushes Bulldawgs past Marblehead

Matt Fraser

January 5, 2015 by Matt Fraser

The Lynn/Winthrop/Saugus girls’ hockey team yielded an early, albeit surprising goal to Marblehead Sunday afternoon at Salem State?s Rockett Arena before ending the opening period tied at one.
When play resumed however, two thirds of the visitors’ top line awoke, leading the Bulldawgs to a 5-1 victory, its fifth consecutive win to open the season.
Flora English and Caroline McKinnon scored two goals apiece in the middle frame to earn the praises of Bulldawgs coach, Anthony Martucci.
?Our first line really started to take off after the puck dropped in the second period and when they get going it’s awfully hard to shut them down,” he said. “I thought Flora had her breakout game today, while Caroline continues to be our go-to scorer. Caroline O’Keefe didn’t make the score sheet today but she has complimented her two linemates extremely well all season long.”
McKinnon, a senior captain, sits just nine points shy of the century mark.
The host Magicians (3-1-1) grabbed the lead just 1:06 into the game when Brooke Keough’s wrist shot deflected off the blocker of a surprised Gretchen Howard (22 saves), and into the net.
Winthrop/Lynn/Saugus found the equalizer a little over six minutes later when Nicole Pucillo misfired on a one-timer from from Annie Mahoney, that fooled goaltender Aly Hopkins (24 saves).
Cape Cod Tech 2, Fenwick 1
At Charles Moore Arena, Amanda Blanchette scored 55 seconds into the second period to cut Fenwick’s two-goal deficit in half, forcing the host-Crusaders to hang on for a victory. Lynn’s Allie Giguere picked up an assist for the visitors in the loss.
Duxbury 4, St. Mary’s 1
At the Bog in Kingston, the defending Division 1 state-champion Dragons scored three first period goals, including two on the power play, to sink the visiting Spartans which finished 0-for-4 with the edge. Sophia Post scored late in the third period for St. Mary’s (0-6).
Cape Cod Tech 3, Fenwick 2 At Charles Moore Arena, in the first half of a back-to-back, the visiting Crusaders fell into a 3-0 hole before Amanda Blanchette scored twice, set up both times by Allie Giguere. Fenwick (4-3-1) hosts Auburn on Sunday in Peabody (9 a.m.).
