The St. Mary’s boys? hockey team earned its second victory in as many nights on Monday evening, rallying from a three-goal deficit for a 5-3 victory over Newburyport at Connery Rink.
Four unanswered goals from the Spartans, including two from freshman Max McKay, allowed the Spartans to improve to 3-4-2 on the season.
?I think I aged a few years tonight,” joked St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee, whose team had a 46-31 advantage in shots on net.
?Through two periods we were a very frustrated bunch, but I credit the guys for keeping their focus and coming away with a win over a quality opponent.”
Mike Desmond and Mike Zampanti scored 42 seconds apart, early in the final frame, to tie the score before McKay tallied the game-winner with 7:55 remaining, assisted by Zampanti and Dante Maribito. An insurance goal from McKay with 13 seconds remaining sealed the win.
?We played a desperate brand of hockey over the final 15 minutes and got a lot of pucks to the net,” said Lee, who pulled goaltender Connor Jennings in favor of Ryan Borders before the third period started.
?I felt we needed to mix things up a bit to try and create some energy.”
The Clippers scored twice in the first period before taking a 3-0 lead 11:42 into the middle period.
?We were snake-bitten early on, hitting a few posts, while Newburyport seemed to capitalize on every mistake that we made,” Lee said.
St. Mary’s received a shot in the arm just 24 seconds later when Jon Powers broke the ice, finishing off a feed from Shawn MacBurnie.TRACK
