LYNN ? Lynn Vocational Technical Institute has two recipients for the prestigious Posse Foundation Scholarship ? Kevin Gomes and Monica Salmeron. Both students say they are highly motivated and very involved, and that they were eager to further their education. But, they said, the cost would have been a major obstacle in attending college. Thanks to the Posse scholarship, they will not have to worry about the cost. And now, they are more relaxed about what lies ahead.”I am looking forward to new experiences, a new journey and a chance to better my education,” Gomes said.Gomes has taken honors and advance placement classes through his high school career. He has also played basketball, football and ran track, and he is a member of the National Honors Society and Skills USA, which involves him in community service. As for Salmeron, “all of this means more opportunities, more connections and a new experience.”Salmeron is busy at home, helping with her 3-year-old sister and her 13-year-old brother. She’s also heavily involved with extracurricular activities and advanced courses such as Skills USA, advanced placement classes and the National Honor Society. She was a part of the mock trial at her school but had to step down because she is currently juggling two jobs.”My biggest obstacle, I would have to say, is time management,” Salmeron said.Gomes will be attending Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and majoring in biology; and Salmeron will be attending Centre College in Danville, Ky., and will either major in mathematics and minor in education or major in pre-physical therapy, which is her ultimate goal.
