The School of Rock is coming to Lynn.The Lynn Municipal Finance Corporation board unanimously approved a $72,000 loan for the business Tuesday.The School of Rock helps students transition from being individual musicians to putting on band performances. Students are able to learn instruments, such as drums and piano, and are also able to receive vocal lessons.William Galatis, who opened a School of Rock in Watertown seven years ago that he said has been very successful, discussed his reasoning for choosing Lynn as a location and how he plans on making the school thrive.Galatis said Lynn is a perfect location, although it was difficult to convince the School of Rock’s Chicago chapter.”The arts and cultural aspect of downtown Lynn is promising and helped in convincing Chicago,” said Galatis, whose plan is to open the School of Rock in the LynnArts building on Exchange Street, not only for the arts and cultural aspect of the building, but also the location is very accessible by public transportation.The program would accept children age 8-18, and after high school, members could join as adults at any age. The cost to join would be $300 a month for children, but financial assistance would be available.Camps for a duration of one week could also be held during school vacations as well as summer sessions for students who might not want to make a full commitment right away.The LMFC provides low-interest loans to new and existing businesses and encourages small-business investment in designated areas.
