Lynn Classical’s girls? basketball team needed the perfect mix of experience and expectations at the forward position to come away with a 35-34 overtime victory over visiting Danvers on Friday night.
Senior Heidi Milhelm scored a team-high 12 points in regulation before adding the Rams? lone field goal in the extra session, before freshman Paris Wilkey (11 points) hit the winning free-throw.
?The young and the old combined to make a lot of key plays down the stretch tonight,” said Classical coach Tom Sawyer, whose team improved to 3-5 with the win. “Heidi has provided us with tremendous leadership all season long. Paris has provided us with tremendous upside and continues to get better.”
Milhelm made sure overtime was needed to decide a victor, hitting the tying field goal with just 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. A heads-up defensive play from Rams junior Chenysse Hill resulted in a steal that erased any chance the Falcons had at an answer.
Hill (four assists) and fellow junior guard Shannon Magner scored five points each for Classical (3-5).
Siobhan Moriarty scored a game-high 13 points for Danvers.
The Falcons turned a three-point deficit after three quarters (26-23) into a fourth-period lead, forcing the Rams to rally. Devan Walsh added 10 points in the tight loss.
Swampscott 42, Lynn English 40
A slow start resulting in a 16-4 deficit after one quarter hurt the Bulldogs, who turned in their best effort of the season in a hard-fought loss to the Big Blue. Waleska Muriel scored a game-high 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for English (1-7). Jaymie Caponigro’s 12 points paced Swampscott.
KIPP 64, Pioneer Charter 29
A game-high 25 points from Alex Huffman guided the Panthers to their second conference win in as many games. Serena High (nine points) and Nayeli Germosen (eight) turned in solid offensive performances for KIPP (4-2 overall). The Panthers are back in action tonight against St. Andrew’s (RI).
Rockport 54, Lynn Tech 19
Jamila Constantine scored six points for the Tigers, who fell to 1-8 on the season. Lila Nieves added five points for Tech. But the Tigers had no answer for Rockport?s Rachel Haselguard, who poured in a game-high 25 points for the Vikings, who held the hosts to one point in the first quarter and two in the third.
Peabody 41, Winthrop 32
Marina DeMild?s 14 total rebounds proved every bit as important as the 16 points scored by teammate Courtney Bua in the Tanners? upset victory over the visiting Vikings. Danielle Sullivan pulled down nine rebounds for the Tanners (3-3), who also got 10 points from Sara Hosman. Winthrop got 24 combined points from Niki Tsiotos (13) and Kristen Siscamanis.
Revere 52, Marblehead 48
Tiphani Harris scored 22 points to lead the Patriots past the visiting Magicians. Meaghan Gotham added 14 points for Revere, which improved to 5-1. Marblehead (5-2) got 11 points from Colby Shea as well as 10 each from Jennie Norcross and Mia Bongiorno.
Salem 55, Saugus 30
The visiting Sachems had no answer for Jackie Panneton who finished with a game-high 22 points for the Witches. Saugus (1-8) got a career-high 10 points from Kathryn White, as well as four points and eight rebounds from Krissy Italiano.
Lynnfield 57, Triton 30
The host Pioneers controlled play from start to finish and got a game-high 20 points from Emma Mancini who finished with 12 rebounds. Marie Norwood narrowly missed a double-double for Lynnfield (6-2) with nine points and 11 rebounds. The Pioneers also got 16 points from Toni Dicesare in the victory.
Beverly 52, Gloucester 35Natalie Mellinger scored 17 points to lead the Panthers to a conference win at home. Alicia Cecchini scored in double-digits for the first time, with 11 points, while Melissa Lubas chipped in with six points. Beverly (6-2) got five points apiece from Olivia George and Maddie McGraw in the win.
