A Revere man was held on $500 cash bail after police said he was driving drunk and without a license when he crashed into a telephone pole on Route 1A, prompting a power outage and major traffic delays Sunday morning.Santiago Gonzalez, 41, of Revere, pleaded not guilty Monday in Chelsea District Court to charges of operating under the influence of liquor; and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.Boston Police responded to Route 1A North and Boardman Street in Suffolk Downs at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday where they found a telephone pole had been chopped in half and transformers and junction boxes on the ground, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said in a press release. A power outage was affecting a large surrounding area.Officers allegedly found Gonzalez in the driver’s seat of a white Toyota Tundra that had stopped on the grass off the side of the road. He was taken to the station where police said Gonzalez failed several sobriety tests. A taxi driver also allegedly told police he had hit downed wires from the pole and crashed into the curb. Police said nobody was injured in the crash.Jordan Avery and Clay Walsh of Lynn were passengers in a car that approached the area shortly after the crash. Avery helped the cab driver get out of his taxi, while Walsh used the flashlight on his iPhone to warn other vehicles as they approached, averting additional accidents.Assistant District Attorney Emily Hamrock requested Gonzalez be held on $2,500 cash bail and remain drug- and alcohol-free and not drive. Judge John McDonald imposed $500 cash bail and the requested conditions of release, according to Conley’s office. Gonzalez is scheduled to return to court March 5.
