Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins has been sworn back into service by U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.In a special ceremony, Warren delivered the oath of office to Sheriff Tompkins, who will continue serving the Suffolk County communities of Revere, Winthrop, Boston and Chelsea, as he has since January 2013.Tompkins was appointed to the position by former Gov. Deval Patrick to fill the vacancy left when Andrea Cabral was tapped to serve as the state’s secretary of public safety and security.He was officially elected to the position on Nov. 4.As the sheriff of Suffolk County, Tompkins manages all operations at the Suffolk County House of Correction, the Nashua Street Jail and the civil process division. In addition to providing care, custody and rehabilitative support for inmates and pretrial detainees, Tompkins also oversees a management, security and administrative staff of more than 1,000.
