With the Northeastern Conference championship virtually on the line Tuesday at the Lynch/Van Otterloo YMCA, Marblehead coach Sue Guertin unleashed a lineup on which she had been working for a couple of weeks leading up to the meet.
The Magicians? depth and talent was on full display as they swept the relays and added six individual event wins to overwhelm Beverly, 101-80.
?I really didn?t think that we would pull this off because (Beverly) has such great swimmers,” Guertin said. “But the kids were able to do it.”
Marblehead (6-0) had a double winner in Charlie Seltzer, who won the 100-yard backstroke in 57.26 seconds and 500-yard freestyle (4:56.50). Also recording individual wins for Marblehead were Zach Michaels in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.86), Kylie Cronin in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.54), Ellie Ronan in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.98), Tom Gabel in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.59) and Tom Rockett in the 50-yard freestyle (25.04). Jake Driscoll won the diving competition with 227.10 points.
The Magicians really rolled up points in the relays. Seltzer, Gabel, Cronin and Michaels won the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.07). Hill, Driscoll, Rockett and Gabel took the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:45.25). Cronin, Ronan, Seltzer and Michaels won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:37.73).
?This was awesome,” Guertin said. “When it?s an easy meet, you can?t get good times so you?re not sure they are going to do it. But they found a way to get it done.”
