St. Mary?s and Hingham have been two of the perennial powers in Division 1 girls? hockey for the past decade and the two rivals got together again on Wednesday at Connery Rink.
The Spartans, who came in at an uncharacteristic 1-7, got a pair of goals from defenseman Ashley Wojewodzic and 17 saves in net by Brittany McPherson to post a 3-1 win over the Harborwomen.
?This was a good win for us,” St. Mary?s coach Frank Pagliuca said. “We are starting to play a little more consistent and with confidence.”
St. Mary?s netted the only goal of the first period when Wojewodzic was set up by Sarah Ryan at 11:24. Wojewodzic scored again early in the second as she finished off a Katie Turban feed to make it 2-0.
Just over four minutes later, the Spartans (2-7-0) were on a power play and increased the lead to 3-0. Ryan and Adara Nazarian picked up the assists as Katerina Roy fired a shot past Julianna Lynch at 6:10.
Hingham (1-5-3) wouldn?t go quietly, though, as it had seven power plays in the game but failed to convert on any of them thanks to the stingy St. Mary?s defense. Julianna Gong got one past McPherson midway through the third, but Hingham could get no closer.
?It was nice to see our defense step up and make some big plays,” Pagliuca said.
:Brittany also has been really strong in the net for the last couple of games.”
Bulldawgs 6, Marblehead 1
The Winthrop/Lynn/Saugus cooperative dominated the final two periods to turn a close game into a runaway. Caroline McKinnon had a pair of goals to lead the Bulldawgs? (8-0-0) offense while Caroline O?Keefe had a goal and two assists.
Ashley Miles and Catie O?Shea added goals while Flora English had two assists. Marblehead?s (3-3-2) lone goal came unassisted by Hadley Woodfin in the first period to tie the game at 1-1.
?The girls played really, really well,” Bulldawgs coach Anthony Martucci said. “I was starting to get worried that we weren?t going to form into the team that I thought we?d be. But we went in the right direction (on Wednesday).”
Gretchen Howard was outstanding once again net for the Bulldawgs, stopping 14 of the 15 shots she faced. For the season, the sophomore has allowed just seven goals on 155 shots.
?Gretchen is a gamer and a leader,” Martucci said. “She is everything that you could possibly want in a goalie.”
Peabody 7, Bishop Fenwick 1
The Tanners (2-5-1) put together a solid 45-minute effort as Elise Murphy turned in a hat trick and an assist while linemate Jillian Arigo had a goal and three assists to lead the offense.
?The girls really played well,” Peabody coach Larry Minehan said.Caroline Buckley had two goals and Kathryn DiGulio also added a goal for the Tanners. Fenwick (4-5-1) got its lone goal from Caitlin Carney late in the second period.
