The Rams were looking for the upset on Friday night. But they faltered in the second half and Winthrop took over, beating Lynn Classical, 40-23.
The Rams (4-7) had to like their chances at halftime considering they were only down 17-13. But a 16-point fourth quarter from the Vikings dashed any hopes of an upset.
Despite the loss, Classical head coach Tom Sawyer stayed positive.
?I think we played well defensively against some really good offensive players,” he said. “We just struggled to get the ball in the net tonight.”
The Vikings improved to 8-3 with the win Friday night. Senior captain Niki Tsiotis scored eight points in the win. Kristen Siscamanis, Winthrop?s other senior captain, dropped a game-high 17 points.
“She always has a great game,” said Winthrop coach Ignacio Oyola.
Bishop Fenwick 64, Matignon 33
The Crusaders improved to 6-4 on the season with a convincing win on the road over Matignon. Colleen Corcoran led Fenwick with 14 points and Fredi Deguglielmo chipped in seven.
Coach Adam DeBaggis was happy with his team?s efforts.
?We played a nice spread offense tonight and we were great all around,” he said. “But I really think we came out of the half well and played a great third quarter.”
That third quarter saw the Crusaders go on a 20-8 run that basically sealed the game for them. The Fenwick defense certainly came to play. Fenwick outscored Matignon, 33-16, in the second half.Masconomet 47, Lynnfield 24
Masconomet had little trouble with the Pioneers, cruising to the 23-point victory. Senior Meghan Collins was the leading scorer for Masco with 13 points, while sophomore Grace Fahey contributed nine points.
Pioneers coach Bob Melillo wasn?t happy with his team?s play in the middle of the game, but he liked how they started and finished it.
?We came out fine and we finished pretty strong,” he said. “But those two quarters in the middle where we gave up 31 points kind of killed us.”
Peabody 52, Saugus 34
Although Saugus (1-9) jumped out to an early lead, Peabody stayed calm and battled back. The Tanners outscored the Sachems in every quarter for the rest of the game after that.
Tanners coach Stan McKeen gave credit to Saugus for coming out so strong.
?I think they surprised us with how fast they started,” he said. “But eventually we were able to settle down and get a win.”
Sachems coach Mark Schruender was also happy with the way the game started.
?I think that first half was as good as we?ve played all year,” he said. “Unfortunately we just couldn?t sustain it for the whole game.”
Junior captain Sara Hosman led the way for the Tanners (5-3), scoring 15 points to lead all scorers. Senior captain Courtney Bua dropped 11 and Christa Baker had six in the win.
Saugus? highlights included the play of Caity Sheehan, who came off the bench to drop seven points. Gabrielle Valente also had a good game, scoring seven points and playing a great defensive game.Revere 56, Gloucester 29
The Patriots (7-1) made quick work of Gloucester and walked into halftime with a 20-point lead. Things didn?t improve much for Gloucester in the second half as it just couldn?t get through Revere?s tough defense. Senior Tiphani Harris was the leading scorer for the Patriots with 13 points. Meaghan Gotham had 11 points and three players (Natasha Iacoviello, Maritza Scott and Ally Hinojosa) all finished with six points.
Revere coach Diana DeCristoforo was very happy with her team?s performance.?We really put pressure on them from the tip with full-court man defense,” she said. “All the girls played it great and I?m very proud of them.”
