The Bulldawgs (9-1) rebounded on Monday with a solid effort, shutting out Medford, 3-0. The win came in response to the first loss of the season for the combined Lynn/Winthrop/Saugus team, Saturday against Masconomet.
Winthrop?s Flora English, Gabby Kenniston and Annie Mahoney each had a goal while Gretchen Howard stopped 33 pucks to turn in her fourth shutout of the season.
English gave Howard all the offensive support she needed early in the first, scoring on a breakaway just 92 seconds into the game. Kenniston?s goal early in the second, assisted by Winthrop?s Caroline O?Keefe and Caroline McKinnon, increased the lead before Mahoney?s goal with 3:37 left in the second completed the scoring.
?It really was a good battle,” Bulldawgs? coach Anthony Martucci said. “Medford played really strong.”
St. Mary?s 8, Newton North 1
It was the kind of offensive performance that St. Mary?s coach Frank Pagliuca had been waiting to see from his team all season. Sam Callahan had a hat trick and two assists and Adara Nazarian added two goals and an assist to lead St. Mary?s.
?It was nice to see our offense come alive and finish some chances,” Pagliuca said.
The Spartans (4-8) didn?t waste much time in getting started as Callahan set up Katerina Roy just 86 seconds in for a 1-0 lead. Nazarian increased the lead to 2-0 midway through the first, assisted by Vanessa VanBuskirk and Callahan.
Nazarian struck again in the first minute of the second period, again off a Callahan helper. Callahan then made it 4-0 when Sarah Ryan and Nazarian set her up at 13:11.
Callahan kept the onslaught going when she scored twice in a little over two minutes early in the third to complete her hat trick. Newton North spoiled Brittany McPherson?s shutout bid with 9:59 to go when Katie Turban and Maggie Flaherty scored 24 seconds apart to close the scoring.
Ryan and VanBuskirk had two assists while Roy and Turban finished with a goal and an assist.
Beverly 4, Peabody 2
The game was scoreless through two periods thanks mainly to the goaltending of Peabody (2-8-1) sophomore Lauren Hennessey, who stopped all 27 shots she faced. But the Panthers? (5-2-1) firepower came through in the third as Kristen McCarthy scored twice, including the game winner with 6:00 left.
McCarthy also assisted on McKinley Karpa?s goal early in the third that broke the scoreless deadlock. Bella Piscatelli answered back for Peabody before Izzy Primack gave Beverly back the lead.
Peabody tied the score again before McCarthy scored twice in four minutes to seal it for the Panthers.
Auburn 5, Bishop Fenwick 1
The Crusaders (5-6-1) never were able to get a foothold in the game as Rachel Crowley had a hat trick for Auburn. Fenwick?s Amanda Blanchette?s scored an unassisted goal early in the third.
Masconomet 6, Marblehead 2Marblehead (3-5-2) spotted Masco a 4-0 lead before Brooke Keough and Emmarose Winder scored a minute apart in the third period to cut the deficit in half. Masco, however, responded with a pair of late goals to complete the win. Marlbehead?s Hadley Woodfin and Sydney Cresta each had an assist while Aly Hopkins made 20 stops in goal.
