For coach Joe Conlon and his Lynn Jets, Saturday night’s 3-1 win over Revere is one that could become a turning point.
Trailing, 1-0, early in the second period, the Jets rallied to tie the game late in the second and then used two goals from Mark Brazell in the third period to defeat the defending Northeastern Conference/South champs at Connery Rink.
?It was a big step for us,” Lynn coach Joe Conlon said. “We hadn’t really come from behind all year so it was nice to see us do that.”
Revere’s (1-8-2) Anthony Cecca opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 3:13 of the second period. It stayed that way until Lynn?s Sean Devin lit the lamp with 3:44 left in the period, assisted by Caleb Reddick and Tyler Craig.
Brazell then gave the Jets (3-6-1) the lead right off the opening draw in the third as he finished a Corey Wojewodzic pass just seven seconds in. The Lynn defense locked down Revere?s offense from there, and Brazell added an empty-net goal with 38 seconds remaining.
?We came out and played a really nice third period,” Conlon said.
St. Mary’s 2, Bishop Fenwick 2
The Crusaders (2-6-2) nearly pulled off a gigantic stunner thanks to the outstanding play of Bobby Lombardi in net. The senior from Lynn was under constant pressure and stopped 44 of the 46 shots he faced. Bishop Fenwick had a two-goal lead but St. Mary’s (5-4-2) scored twice in a span of 34 seconds late in the third to steal a point.
?We ran into one of the hottest goaltenders I’ve seen in a long time,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said. “I was proud of how my guys didn’t stop fighting when we got down 2-0. We kept fighting even when we couldn’t get the puck past (Lombardi).”
St. Mary’s supplied plenty of pressure in the first period, outshooting the Crusaders, 13-1, but couldn’t score. In fact, the only quality chance for either team came on the opening shift when St. Mary?sRyan Bordersstopped Mike Gallant on a breakaway.
The second period was more of the same, ending with St. Mary’s holding a 32-4 advantage in total shots on goal. But the Crusaders left the ice with the lead on Matt Townsend’s power-play goal at 7:38.
Early in the third, Eric Giguere increased the lead to 2-0 with another power-play goal and it looked like a major upset was happening. But Brady MacLaughlin scored at 9:12 before Jon Powers scored on the next shift for St. Mary’s.
?Bobby played great,” Fenwick coach Chuck Allen said. “If you had told me before the game that we’d take a point from (St. Mary’s), I would have taken it.”
Gloucester 3, Swampscott 2
The Big Blue (3-7) clawed back from a 2-0 third-period deficit to tie the game with just under four minutes left. But Eddie Mahoney’s power-play goal, his second tally of the game, won it for Gloucester with 16 seconds left in the game.
?It was frustrating,” Swampscott coach Gino Faia said. “We battled hard to get back in the game. So it’s a shame we couldn’t get a point out of it.”
Gloucester led, 2-0, after two periods on goals by Mahoney and Sal Costanzo off assists from Alex Enes. Dom Codispoti scored early in the third for the Big Blue, assisted by Mike Johnson and Ryan Cresta, to cut Gloucester?s lead to one.
Peter Doyle tied the game at 11:13 of the third and it looked like both teams would get a point. But Mahoney scored with two seconds left on a penalty as time was running out to give the NEC/South leaders (5-3-1) the win.
Danvers 1, Marblehead 1
The Falcons (6-4-1) looked like they were going to get the win as they held a 1-0 lead late in the third period before Marblehead?s (6-3-1) Cam McDonald fired home an unassisted goal with 2:00 left.
Danvers had taken the lead late in the first period on Rob Tibbetts? power play goal, assisted by Kyle Cahill and Ryan Buchanan, with 1:13 left. Tibbetts also had a chance in the final seconds to win the game but Mark Scribner made a huge save for Marblehead.
