January 20, 2015 by Matthew Roy

Just 91 seconds into its game against Division 3 West power Agawam, the Marblehead boys? hockey team was already down a goal. That early tally proved to be the kick start Marblehead needed as Nate Witherell and Braden Haley scored 91 seconds apart later in the first to give Marblehead a lead they never relinquished in a 3-1 victory.
?Their early goal kind of woke us up a little bit,” Marblehead coach Bob Jackson said. “Agawam was a good team and they made us work hard to get the win.”
Seamus Curran was the skater who gave Agawam the early lead but Marblehead (7-3-1) turned to its depth to get back in the game. First, it was the third line that came through as Witherell tied the score, 1-1, 4:22, assisted by Danny Gienieszko and Duncan Leggett.
Shortly after that, Marblehead?s top unit was on the attack as Haley potted his 10thgoal of the year, set up by Cam McDonald and Tim Kalinowski, for a 2-1 lead after one.
Marblehead dominated the rest of the way but it stayed a 2-1 game until late in the third when second-line winger Colin Daly scored off assists by Owen Picariello and James McCarthy. Mark Scribner made 18 stops to get the win in net.
Austin Prep 2, St. Mary?s 1
The game went according to plan for the Spartans (5-5-3) for 30 minutes as they carried a 1-0 lead into the third period against the back-to-back Super 8 runner-up. But Anthony Cieri, of Saugus, tied the game early in the third for Austin Prep before former St. Mary?s skater Eric MacAdams won the game for Austin on a short-handed goal with 9:02 left.
?We did everything we had to do for two periods to win the game,” St. Mary?s coach Mark Lee said. “We made a couple of mistakes in the third and they are too talented of a team to do that against.”
Andrew LoRusso was brilliant in his first career start between the pipes, finishing with 32 saves on 34 shots.
?Andrew did an incredible job. He gave us a chance to win,” Lee said. “We just got a fatigued at the end.”
Swampscott 5, Lowell 2
The Big Blue (4-7) picked up a much-needed two points thanks to a strong third period in which they scored three times to break a 2-2 tie through 30 minutes.
Louis Olivieri (goal, assist) netted what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 4:30 of the third, assisted by Mike Johnson and Dom Codispoti. Three minutes later, Ryan Cresta scored before Steve Dandreo had an empty-net tally in the final minute to complete the scoring.
Anthony Springthorpe and Steve Santanello also had goals for Swampscott.
?In the third, we came out and got some pucks to the net and got rebound goals,” Swampscott coach Gino Faia said.
Matignon 8, Saugus 0
It was a rough outing for the Sachems (3-7) as penalties and the strong play of the Warriors were too much to overcome.
Bishop Fenwick 6, Blue Hills Tech 0
The Crusaders (3-6-2) had a dominating effort against Blue Hills. Rob Murphy, Chris Napolitano and Jimmy Moore all had a goal and an assist to lead the offense.
?The kids now believe that they can win and that?s huge,” Fenwick coach Chuck Allen said.
Fenwick scored three times in the first before adding two goals in the second and another in the third. Greg McGunigle, Mike Gallant and Will Bethune also had goals for the Crusaders while Bobby Lombardi stopped all 15 shots he faced in net.North Reading 4, Beverly 1
The Panthers (5-7) ran into a buzzsaw against one of Division 2 North?s most explosive teams. Ted Leathersich?s penalty shot in the second period was Beverly?s only goal.Danvers 2, Methuen 2The Falcons (6-4-2) led most of the way thanks to goals from Rob Tibbetts and Ryan Buchanan but had to settle for a tie when Methuen scored in the third period.
