School Roundup: Bailer’s 34 points leads Spartan boys hoop to win

St. Mary’s senior guard Dennis Bailer was all over the place for the Spartans on Monday night in a 71-62 win against Cathedral. Along with his 34 points, Bailer added seven rebounds and five assists. But he wasn?t the only one who had a terrific night for the Spartans. Sophomores Jonny Mercado finished with 15 points and five assists while Mike Cerulli scored 11 points.
The Spartans led by just two points heading into the fourth quarter. Then St. Mary?s exploded for 23 points in the fourth and locked down defensively. They gave up just 12 points in the final frame and walked away with a solid win.
Spartans? coach Dave Brown was pleased with his team?s performance.
?It was good to see us get back on track tonight,” he said. “And Bailer just played huge for us.”
St. John?s Prep 55, Quincy 46
The Eagles improved to 6-3 with a solid win over Quincy at the BABC tournament on Monday afternoon. St. John?s was led by senior point guard Kareem Davis, who scored 26 points and ran the show from the point. The Eagles also got a stellar game from junior center Harry O?Neil, who was a force on the inside and finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots.
?Those guys played great for us tonight,” Eagles? coach John Dullea said of Davis and O?Neill.
BOYS? TRACK
Swampscott 56, Winthrop 29
The Winthrop boys are still without a win this season after falling to Swampscott on Monday. The Vikings won four events, two by Marc Bouche who took first in the high jump with a height of 5 feet 9 inches and won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.2 seconds. The third win for Winthrop came from Christopher Beaudray, who won the 600-meter race with a time of 1:38.8. The Vikings also won the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:28.4.
Swampscott had six winners. Barry Tevrow took first place in the shot put with a distance of 45- 7 ?. Danny Hingston ran the 55-meter dash in 7.1 seconds to earn first place. Frankie Dilisio kept the winning going in the 300 meters (40.1) and Jack Dennehy won the 600 meters (2:55.8). In the longer distances, Oliver Daniels-Koch won the mile (5:17.5) and Bennett Smith won the two-mile race (11:05.7).
?This was another true team win,” Swampscott coach Jeff Bartlett said. “We shuffled some guys around and it worked out well for us.”
GIRLS? TRACK
Swampscott 45, Winthrop 41
The Big Blue edged out a close win over Winthrop. Both teams won five events, but Swampscott took the win with its depth. Swampscott?s Michelle Connor won the high jump (4-6) , Mackenzie Faulkner won the 55-meter dash (7.5) and Bailey Shorr took the 300-meter race (47.1). Swampscott won both long-distance events, with Isabella Kornisky (mile, 6:14.4) and Veronica Rizzo (two mile, 13:20.1).The Vikings put up a good fight, starting with the shot put, which . Katherine Teixeira won with a distance of 25-10 ?. Carly O?Keefe won the 55-meter hurdles (9.4) and Holly Benson won the 600 meters (1:49.6). Heidy Benson took the 1000-meter race (3:32.1). Winthrop also took first in the 4×400-meter relay (4:41.9).
