Girls’ Basketball: Muriel’s big night leads English to a win

January 21, 2015 by Mike Alongi

Waleska Muriel was all over the court in Lynn English?s 59-33 win over Saugus Tuesday night. In addition to dropping an impressive 32 points on Saugus, the standout freshman guard pulled down eight rebounds, dished out six assists and grabbed 10 steals. Dorothy Ezemba was the next-highest scorer with nine points.
Muriel?s play suggests that the future could be bright for the Bulldogs, who are a disappointing 2-9 this season.
English coach Rachael Bradley was pleased with her team?s performance.
?We finally put a full four quarters together,” she said. “It?s nice to see everyone?s hard work paying off.”
Peabody 56, Gloucester 46
The Tanners improved to 6-3 on the season after beating Gloucester on the road. Peabody was led by junior captain Sara Hosman, who had 15 points. The Tanners? other captain, senior Courtney Bua, also had a nice night with 13 points.
The Tanners got out ahead early thanks to some great shooting and lock-down defense. Once they established a lead, however, they relaxed on the defensive end and Gloucester crept back in. It was only after the Tanners got back into the press man defense that they were able to pull away for good.
?We got a little lazy there once we got a nice lead,” Peabody coach Stan McKeen said. “We?ve got to stay in it the whole time.”
Marblehead 43, Lynn Classical 41
Classical (4-8) did a nice job for much of the game, said Rams? coach Tom Sawyer, but it just wasn?t enough.
?This was one of our better games we?ve played in the past week or so,” he said. “But we needed one or two more plays to pull out the win.”
Chenysse Hill led the Rams in scoring with 14 points. Freshman forward Paris Wilkey had six points.
Lynnfield 39, Charlestown 23
After jumping out to an early 11-2 lead, Lynnfield coasted to an easy victory on the road. Emma Mancini was the high scorer for the Pioneers, with 13 points while Toni DiCesare had six points.
Bishop Fenwick 60, Cardinal Spellman 56
Colleen Corcoran had a big night for the Crusaders (7-4) once again, finishing with 20 points. Fenwick went into the half with a nine-point lead and never surrendered it. Although they were outscored in the second half, the Crusaders were able to hold off Spellman for the win.
Revere 51, Danvers 34
After the first quarter, it didn?t look like Revere could pull out a win against Danvers, but the Patriots managed it. After falling behind, 14-0, to start the game, the Patriots charged back and locked down on defense. They employed a full-court press and forced turnovers, then turned them into easy transition baskets. They took the lead going into halftime and never surrendered it.
?Give credit to Danvers, they came out hot and we had no answers,” said Patriots? coach Diana DiCristoforo. “But after we buckled down defensively I thought we played great.”
Adanna Hector, with 10 points, and Tiphani Harris, with seven, each had strong games for the Patriots.
Salem 48, Swampscott 30Brianna Rodriguez had 14 points for the Witches and Jackie Panneton added 13 as Salem (9-1) won its eighth consecutive game. Jaymie Caponigro had 11 points for Swampscott (5-6).
