LYNN – A man broke into a home, robbed a man at knifepoint, stole his car and was drunk when he drove it into a ditch at Union Hospital after a police chase Monday evening, police said.Tuesday, the man was held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.”(The defendant) was yelling ?it’s Martin Luther King’s Birthday, and I’m black!’ and yelled ?why are you doing this?!'” Lynn Police Officer Jeffrey Trahant wrote in a report.Ricky Robinson, 32, of 148 S. Common St. #1, was arrested and charged with armed assault during a burglary; assault with a dangerous weapon; larceny of a motor vehicle; operating under the influence of liquor; failure to stop for police; resisting arrest; disorderly conduct; malicious damage to a motor vehicle; leaving the scene of property damage; negligent operation of a motor vehicle; and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle; at 6:18 p.m. Monday.A plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf Tuesday in Lynn District Court, according to court documents.A caller on Broadway reported to police at 7:07 p.m. Monday that he had been robbed at knifepoint in his home by the man, who was wearing a dark coat and backpack. The suspect was, meanwhile, allegedly also stealing the man’s red Ford Escape.Other officers subsequently reported trying to pull over the vehicle on Lynnfield Street. But the driver fled, heading out Lynnfield Street at approximately 50 miles per hour, police reported.The driver eventually pulled into the parking lot at Union Hospital, hit a parked car, and tried to circle back around … but veered into a ditch, police said.Officers said the driver, later identified as Robinson, emerged from the vehicle and began to “violently resist” officers trying to cuff him, Lynn Police Officer Paul Scali reported.”He began shouting at officers stating, ?this is Martin Luther King Day! I needed to get to the hospital because I have a rash!,'” Scali reported.Officers noted they could smell “a strong odor of alcohol” on Robinson.Back at the Broadway residence, the alleged victim told police he had been alone on the second floor of his home when he heard a noise and came downstairs to investigate, according to police.The alleged victim told officers he found a large black man, whom he did not know, in the kitchen. The man, later identified as Robinson, allegedly held up a knife and demanded the alleged victim’s money.Robinson allegedly followed the resident upstairs (also reportedly stumbling on the stairs) to retrieve the alleged victim’s wallet, which had $23, police reported. Robinson then took the alleged victim’s car keys.”Robinson attempted to open the sliding glass door but was having trouble,” police said. “(The alleged victim) asked Robinson why he wasn’t leaving through the front door. Robinson yelled ?why are you helping me!? Everybody that ends up helping me always ends up (expletive)-ing me!'”Officers reportedly found a ladder propped up against the house which Robinson likely used to get onto the back deck. The alleged victim said a knife police found in the car was from his kitchen and positively identified Robinson as the burglar, police said.At Robinson’s arraignment Tuesday, Essex Assistant District Attorney Brendan Kelley requested that Robinson be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.Lynn District Court Judge Albert Conlon accepted the request, ordering Robinson held without bail pending a hearing next Tuesday.
