School Roundup: St. Mary’s swimmers come up just short against O’Bryant

The Spartans were shorthanded Wednesday night and came up just short, 86-82, against a good O?Bryant team. Some of the Spartan swimmers were missing because of a class trip, but that still didn?t slow the team down.
?It was back and forth the whole meet,” St. Mary?s coach Michele Brewster said. “The kids who were here tonight really stepped up for us and did great.”
The Spartans had three first-place finishers. Eve Smith won the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:29.13. Danny Rodriguez took first in the 50-meter freestyle (27.87) and Gabby Marchesse took first in the 100-meter butterfly (1:12.75). St. Mary?s also had several second-place finishers, including Dami Rodriguez in the 200-meter freestyle (2:42.09) and Sophia Gomes in the 500-meter freestyle (7:34.41). In addition, the Spartans placed second in the 200- and 400-meter freestyle relays. In the 200 meters it was the team of Smith, Rodriguez, Vanessa Dal and Maggie Carroll with a time of 2:02.75. In the 400 meters it was the team of Gomes, P.J. Hatchouel, Erin Johnson and Theresa Klosewicz with a time of 5:11.84.
SWIMMING
Greater Lowell 99, Lynn Tech 73
It was a tough day for the 3-4 Tigers as they managed only two event wins from Nick Westin in the 200-yard IM (2:40.94) and Joie Donnelly in the 100-yard backstroke (1:29.37).
BOYS? TRACK
Danvers 46, Saugus 40
The Falcons notched a nice win over Saugus on the road. Danvers had one double winner on the boys? side, Zach Persson, who won the high jump with a height of 5 feet 10 inches and the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.8 seconds. Other winners for Danvers were Jason McCannon (shot put, 39-11?), John Thomas (300 meters, 38.5 seconds) and Kevin Hebert (mile, 4:59.3).
The winners for Saugus were Alex Kotkowski (55-meter hurdles, 8.1 seconds), Andrew Merlina (600 meter, 1:41), Nick Monaco (1000 meter, 3:01.3) and Connor MacEachern (two miles, 12:09).GIRLS? TRACK
Danvers 55, Saugus 29
Danvers had no trouble with Saugus, winning all but one event. Karen Hovey took first in the shot put (32-9 ?). Erin St. Pierre won the 55-meter hurdles (9.6) and Angela Calderone took the 55-meter dash (7.7). The Falcons also dominated the middle and longer distances. Gabrielle Loughlin won the 300 meters (48.7). Katie Crum took the 600 meters (2:00.1) and Becky Henion won the 1000 meters (3:29.6). In the longer distances, Olivia Heutlinger won the mile in 6:25.5 and Erin Flynn won the two miles with a time of 15:12.4.
The lone winner for Saugus was Gianna Filarentos, (high jump, 5-0).
WRESTLING
Danvers 59, Marblehead/Swampscott 3
The Falcons simply dominated Marblehead/Swampscott from start to finish, winning every decision by pinfall. The winners for Danvers were Chris Karedis at 106 pounds, Colby Holland (113), Micah Manumbu (126), Dylan Fountain (132), Chris Behens (138), Matt Reidy (145), Quin Holland (160), Zach Patt (170) and Zach Schultz (195). The win brings Danvers? record to 9-2 this season.
The lone winner from Marblehead/Swampscott was their sophomore captain Stephen Hopkins, who won via decision at 120 pounds.
St. John?s 69, Xaverian 3
The Eagles are simply unstoppable–and unbeatable–on the mat this year. St. John?s improved to 27-0 after a 69-3 shellacking of Xaverian at home Wednesday. The Eagles won at every weight class. The winners were Sam Little (106), Malcolm Mitchell (113), Zach Alexander (120), John McNaught (126), John Grady (132), Hunter Costa (145), Ryan Collins (152), Ben DiNatale (160), David Yepez (170), Frank Soucy (195), Ian Butterbrodt (220) and Jay Carnevale (285).The Beverly-Gloucester meet was cancelled. No makeup date has been set yet.
