It was only nine days ago that the Lynn Jets were in a world of trouble when it came to potentially qualifying for the Division 3 North tournament. The reigning Northeastern Conference/South champs sat at 2-6-1 with the meat of their schedule coming up.
Turn the clock ahead now the Jets are very much in the playoff conversation thanks to a third consecutive come-from-behind win Saturday in a 5-4 defeat of Newton South on Saturday at Connery Rink.
?We did a great job of responding in the third period,” Lynn coach Joe Conlon said. “It?s a really good win for us.”
The Jets (5-6-1) had led for most of the first two periods before Newton South took a 4-3 lead in the final minute of the second period on Andrew Wales? power-play goal.
Lynn?s top line changed the momentum of the game early in the third period, however, as Corey Wojewodzic scored on a Kyle Morrill rebound to tie the game at 1:48. It took just 120 seconds for the Jets to push in front as Mark Brazell (two goals, two assists) set up Brandon Devin for the go-ahead marker.
Jack Stafford, who was outstanding with several critical saves when the Jets were being dominated in the second period, and the Lynn defense held the fort the rest of the way to seal the win.
?Jack played outstanding. He?s the reason we had a chance to win the game,” Conlon said. “We felt very fortunate to only be down a goal after the second period.”
The teams traded goals through the first period with Brazell scoring twice for the Jets before Brett Molea?s net drive in the final minute of the first resulted in him tipping home a Jon Kosmas pass for a 3-2 Lynn lead after one.
Newton South tied the game on Hampus Samuelsson?s goal early in the second.
St. Mary’s 4, Coyle & Cassidy 2
Mike Zampanti’s second goal of the game, 2:26 into the third period, proved the game-winner for the Spartans, who improved to 6-5-3, in Raynham.
Jon Powers opened the scoring in the first frame (assisted by Shawn MacBurnie and Nico Scalli) before Marc Zampanti helped set up his brother’s first tally, late in the second period, along with Max McKay who finished with two assists).
Coyle cut its deficit to one before Brady McLaughlin (from Eric Pedro) sealed the win. Joe Scalli added an assist for St. Mary’s, which got 23 saves from sophomore goaltender Andrew Lorusso, who made his second start of the season.
Swampscott 3, Salem 0
The Big Blue spoiled the host Witches? (8-3-1) attempt at securing a spot in the state tournament, scoring one goal in each period.
Joey Faia’s first varsity goal was followed by finishes from Ryan Donnelly and Steve Santanello. Swampscott (5-8) got two assists from Mike Johnson as well as 20 saves from sophomore net-minder, Dan Johnson.
Peabody 4, Saugus 1
Four different goal scorers led the visiting Tanners (5-6-1) to a much-needed win on the road over the Sachems. Saugus 2-0, after the opening 15 minutes on Tanner goals by Chris Gillen and Nick Merryman (assisted by Devin Doucette).
Following a second-period tally from Saugus’ (3-8) Brendan Patterson, the visitors received finishes from Owen Brewster (assisted by Jason Marshall) and Reed Foster in the final frame.
Winthrop 2, Marblehead 1
Charlie Page’s game-winning goal with four minutes remaining in the third period allowed the Vikings to move within one victory of clinching the Northeastern Conference/North title outright.
A tally from Alex Anzuoni in the first frame held up for Winthrop (9-2-1), until Tim Kalinowski found the equalizer for the visiting Magicians (8-4-1), with seven minutes remaining in regulation.
Danvers 6, Beverly 3
The Falcons scored twice in each period to outpace the host Panthers who attempted to hang around with solo tallies in all three frames.
Steve Ganley (assist) and Rob Tibbetts had two goals apiece for Danvers (7-5-2), which featured finishes from Sean Lundergan and Conor Purtell (assist) as well as two helpers from Troy Fleming and Kyle Cahill.
