The Bishop Fenwick swim team sent its senior class out in style Sunday as it defeated Austin Prep, 87-83, at the Salem YMCA to complete an undefeated season (8-0) and clinch the Catholic Central League dual-meet title.
The Crusaders had to work for this one though, as they were behind by two points going into the final three events. Sophomore Bryce McCarthy took a fifth place in the 100 backstroke to tie the meet before senior Virginia Ambeliotis? fifth place in the 100 breaststroke gave Fenwick a 79-77 lead.
But there were still 15 points to be had in the day?s final event, the 400 free relay. That?s where the quartet of Emily Ambeliotis, Sarah Long and brothers Connor and Carson Christuk swam a season-best time of 3:48.88 to take first place and clinch the meet for Fenwick.
It was a big day all around for three of the members of that relay team. Carson Christuk won the 200 IM (2:01.31) and 100 butterfly (53.84) while Connor took the 200 free (2:06.03) and 500 free (5:35.94).
Emily Ambeliotis won the 100 backstroke (1:05.89) while Rowan Emerson took the 100 breaststroke (1:11.50). Fenwick also won the 200 medley (1:55.09) and free (1:51.06) relays.
Arlington Catholic 85, St. Mary?s 81
The Spartans (4-5-1) had the lead entering the final event but the Cougars went one-two in the 400 free relay to score 12 points and take the victory.
?It was a great meet,” St. Mary?s coach Michele Brewster said. “The kids did awesome.
Eve Smith and Gaby Marchese and were double winners for St. Mary?s.
Smith took the 100 backstroke (1:08.15) and 200 IM (2:29.56) while Marchese won the 100 breaststroke (1:28.37) and butterfly (1:10.57). Erik Whitcomb was the other individual winner for the Spartans in the 100 freestyle (1:02.41).
Smith, Marchese, Whitcomb and Sophia Gomes won the 200 medley relay (2:14.37) with Smith and Whitcomb joining Danny Rodriguez and Maggie Carroll in the winning 200 free relay (1:56.47).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Beverly 85, Gloucester 84 (2 OT)
Kyle Coughlin (14 points, 8 assists) clinched a dramatic victory for the Panthers (5-7), after making the winning layup at the buzzer, following a coast-to-coast run.
Beverly’s Gavin Sparkman (17 points, 10 rebound) forced a continuation after draining the equalizing three-pointer at the end of the first overtime period. Sam Traicoff scored a team-high 20 points for the hosts who got 10 points and eight rebounds from Ryan Garrity in the win.
Andrew Muniz scored a game-high 25 points for the Fishermen, who carried a comfortable, 40-21 lead into halftime.
Prep 49, Charlestown 47
The visiting Eagles prevailed in a nail-biting finish after Kareem Davis (game-high 14 points) beat the final buzzer of the fourth quarter. Harry O’Neil finished with 12 points and nine rebounds for the Prep (9-3) who jumped out to a 24-3 lead early before falling back on its heels.
Peabody 64, Fenwick 44
Matt Correale scored a game-high 17 points for the visiting Tanners who cruised past their city-rivals.
Peabody (7-6) got 24 points combined from Matt D’Amato (14) and Junior Estrella while the Crusaders (1-10) were led by Ryan Veguilla who finished with 14 points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Fenwick 42, Reading 21
The Crusaders doubled up the visiting Rockets behind a double-double from Colleen Corcoran, who finished with 10 points and as many rebounds. Sydney Brennan scored a team-high 11 points, in addition to six assists and three steals

MSTCA Elite Meet
St. John’s Prep sprinter, Joe Luongo, stole the show at the Reggie Lewis Center in West Roxbury, winning the 600-meter dash with a 1:20.21 to break the meet record.
Luongo was named the day’s “Outstanding Runner” for his victory, which featured the best time posted in the state this year and third best in the country. Beverly’s Bryan Flaherty (1:25.53) finished eleventh.
The Prep’s Josh Raposa, set an indoor personal best with a 4:30 in the mile, placing in between Peabody’s Marcelo Rocha (4:30.86) and Riley Dowd (4:31.63).
