Shula won’t ‘deflate’ issues with Belichick

Justin Barrasso

January 31, 2015 by Justin Barrasso

In his first interview since referring to Patriots? coach Bill Belichick as “Beli-cheat,” the legendary Don Shula shared his insight on Super Bowl XLIX.
?If Seattle wins, they?re going to be repeat winners,” said the 85-year-old Shula. “It?s going to be a great matchup.”
The Hall of Fame coach, who guided the Miami Dolphins to an undefeated championship season in 1972, is also a restaurateur. Shula?s Steakhouse operates in 14 different locations, and the steaks are available for purchase online. Yet it is unlikely Shula will host Belichick for beef tenderloin any time soon.
Belichick and Shula share a lot in common, as they are the only head coaches in NFL history to lead their teams to six Super Bowls. With playoff wins over the Ravens and Colts, Belichick has amassed 21 postseason victories, breaking his tie with Shula, and now stands alone with the most playoff wins by a head coach in NFL history.
Shula refused to praise Belichick?s accomplishment, nor was he willing to touch on its significance.
?I don?t have any comment,” said Shula.
Patriots? quarterback Tom Brady has won 20 career playoff games, the most ever by a starting quarterback. Knowing a thing or two about legendary quarterbacks, Shula was willing to discuss to Brady, comparing him to Dolphins? Hall of Famer Dan Marino.
?I had [Johnny] Unitas in Baltimore, but there?s a lot of similarities between the two in Marino and Brady,” said Shula. “Marino probably had the quickest release of any quarterback that?s ever played the game, and Brady also has a quick release. He very seldom gets caught with the ball. Dan wanted to throw the ball on every down, but Brady mixes the running plays in more than Dan.”
Shula deferred judgment on the never-ending “Deflategate” story.
?That?s something I know very little about, other than what?s in the paper every day,” he said. “That?s for the league to handle.”
A United States military veteran, Shula retired from coaching in 1995. He still misses leading his team into action.
?Standing on the sideline when the ball is kicked off, that?s a special feeling,” said Shula. “I miss the excitement in preparing for the game, and late in a game, when it?s down to the wire, it?s pretty hard to rival that kind of excitement.”
As he watches the current NFL product, Shula doesn?t see many differences on the field from when he coached.
?It wasn?t a minor league when I coached,” he said. “They had eleven guys on the other side when I coached, and they still have eleven on the other side now. So what?s changed so drastically?”
As for a Super Bowl prediction, the Hall of Fame coach would only assure football fans that the game is must-see viewing. “Seattle has a great defense, and they?re pretty good on offense, too,” said Shula. “The Patriots are a great team with a great quarterback. I look forward to watching it unfold.”
