Hockey: Spartans fall to Arlington Catholic

February 4, 2015 by Matthew Roy

Not having been on the ice since Saturday proved costly for the St. Mary?s boys? hockey team against Arlington Catholic on Tuesday. The Spartans were a step behind most of the night and it cost them as the Cougars took a 5-2 win at Ed Burns Arena in Arlington.
?We just didn?t seem to have our legs (Tuesday),” Spartans coach Mark Lee said. “And we lost some of our discipline. But for as bad as we were playing, we were able to stay tight with them.”
Neither team lit the lamp in the first period as the game was scoreless until just past the five minute mark of the second when AC?s Andy Somerville beat Andrew LoRusso for a 1-0 lead. Just under two minutes later, Bernie McGovern increased the Cougars lead to two goals.
St. Mary?s (7-6-3) clawed its way back into the game late in the second when Mike Zampanti scored at 13:34, assisted by Max McKay and Joe Scalli, to cut the deficit to one.
It didn?t stay that way long, however, as Jack Rogers? power-play goal in the first minute of the third restored AC?s two-goal cushion. Brady McLaughlin answered for St. Mary?s a half minute later but Ryan Spagnoli made it 4-2 AC before Rogers added an empty-net goal with 15 seconds left.
?We looked like we were rusty and (AC) capitalizes on every mistake you make,” Lee said.Danvers 3, Peabody 0
The Falcons (9-5-2) qualified for their 26thstate tournament in the last 27 seasons thanks to a three-goal first period and a brilliant 39-save effort by goaltender Alex Taylor.
?We had plenty of chances,” Peabody coach Mark Leonard said. “Taylor made some big saves. He was the difference, that?s for sure.”
Danvers scored just 2:14 in on T.J. Deinstadt?s tally and then saw Steve Ganley and Ryan Buchanan score 11 seconds apart later in the first.
The rest of the game was controlled by the Tanners (6-6-2) but they couldn?t get anything past Taylor as he stopped several point-blank chances.

The Crusaders (4-7-2) ran out to a 4-0 lead after a period and cruised home from there. Matt Townsend had two goals and an assist with Kasey O?Brian also netting a pair for Fenwick.Chris Napolitano and Eric Giguere each had a goal and two assists while Greg McGunigle, Rob Murphy and Sam Mitchell also netted goals. Jimmy Moore dished out three assists.
