The awards keep rolling in for Lynn native and Boston College women?s hockey goaltender Katie Burt, who was named Hockey East?s top netminder for the second time in as many months.
Burt, a freshman, followed up a stellar ending to 2014 with an equally impressive start to the new year, leading Team USA to a gold medal in the2015 International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women’s World Championship in Buffalo in January.
Just 22 games into her collegiate career, Burt has already tied for second place on the Eagles? single-season shutout list with six, including a pair against the University of Vermont in back-to-back games on the road, Jan. 17-18.
Included in Burt?s stat line for the season is a miniscule 1.03 goals against average and a .945 save percentage, which ranks second and third in the nation, respectively.
Burt?s .979 winning percentage is tops in the country for the No. 1-ranked Eagles, who will enter Friday?s game against the University of Connecticut with a 26-0-1 record (17-0-0 in Hockey East), looking to extend their unbeaten streak to 28 games. Burt has appeared in 22 games, with 21 starts, posting a record of 21-0-1.
On Tuesday, Burt will seek out her first Beanpot championship when BC takes on Harvard University at Bright-Landry Hockey Center at 7:30 p.m. She made 17 saves in BC?s opening-round 3-1 win over Northeastern.
?That?s definitely one of our goals (at the beginning of the season),” said Burt of the Eagles? quest for a sixth championship trophy.
For Burt, the decision to attend BC was made that much easier because of the Beanpot?s allure, especially to those with local ties.
?The Beanpot was something that really jumped out to me as one of the things that you always grew up watching, the men obviously because they get all the coverage,” she added.?But, still, it?s something that?s always on the calendar that I liked to watch.”
