The Northeastern Conference?s swimming and diving championships came to its conclusion on Thursday evening with Marblehead on top in both the boys and girls competitions, as well as in the overall standings.
After jumping out to a comfortable lead on the first day of competition on Wednesday, the Magicians put a bow on the sweep with solid performances on Thursday in the diving and 500-yard freestyle compeitions.
In girls? action, Katie Walker took first in diving, ahead of teammate Ryan Driscoll, while Jake Driscoll prevailed in the boys? diving. Zach Michael added a victory in the competition?s final event.
Grace Maguire finished second in the girls? 500-yard freestyle.
The Lynn Classical?s boys? team finished second, thanks in large part to the diving trio of Wallace Kiongo, Bobby Choquette and Micah Dublin, who placed second, third and fourth respectively.
?Their performances really helped us secure a runner-up finish in a very talented conference,” said Rams coach Denise Silva. “Two years ago we won the whole thing but to finish second out of 10 teams isn?t bad at all.”
Classical?s Sarah Sirois placed fourth in the girls? diving event.
On Wednesday, the Rams got a trio of fourth-place freestyle finishes from Kevin Chasse (50 yards), Erinn Daly (200 yards) and Simon Kazimierczyk (100 yards).
Beverly?s girls? team pulled out a runner-up finish behind a strong final day outing from Nicole Welch who won the 500-yard freestyle before finishing second to her sister, Sarah, in the 200-yard freestyle.
Astrid Swensen added a pair of victories in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke for the Panthers, who got a two-three finish in the 50-yard freestyle from Rachel Grant and Andrea Higgins.
Lynn English?s Matt Bruno, of Winthrop, turned in a winning effort in the 100-yard butterfly as well as a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Marina Broufas finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke.
?We had a great meet overall with a lot of improvements from earlier in the year,” said English coach Lisa Trahant. “As a coach, it?s always great to see the kind of turnouts the conference can get for this kind of meet. Everyone seemed to have a great time these past two days.”BOYS? HOCKEY
