Girls Hockey: Fenwick girls hockey closing in on playoff berth

Matt Fraser

February 7, 2015 by Matt Fraser

Following its 1-0 victory over city rival Peabody on Friday evening at McVann-O?Keefe Rink, the Bishop Fenwick girls? hockey team sits just one win shy of what would be the Crusaders? first-ever trip to the state tournament.
Junior goaltender Meghan Woodworth proved the backbone for the Crusaders, making 29 saves for her second shutout of the season.
?(Woodworth) stood on her head all night long, especially in the third period,” said coach Doug Anderson who lauded his team?s efforts in the defensive zone. “The girls did a tremendous job in our own zone, blocking shots and playing with lots of energy.”
Sophomore Caitlin Carney scored the game?s only goal with 1:02 remaining in the first period, finishing off a feed from senior co-captain Nicole Muir.
The win is the first in Fenwick?s four-year program history against Peabody (2-11-2), who won the teams? first meeting of the season in decisive fashion, 7-1, on Jan. 14.
?A lot of hard work and dedication has gone into our team?s big turnaround from last season,” said Anderson, whose team, now 8-7-1, can clinch its trip to the postseason with a victory on ?Senior Day? against visiting Matignon (Sunday, 9 a.m.).

Senior Caroline McKinnon had the game-winning goal and two assists, leaving her one point shy of the century mark with five games remaining in the regular season. The host Bulldogs (10-3) scored four times in both the first and third period.
Catie O?Shea, McKayla Norris and Abby Stafford (first career goal) followed McKinnon in the opening 15 minutes before Flora English added the first of two unassisted tallies in the second.
Kasey Harris Nicole Pucillo and Kelsey Griffiths joined the party in the final session.
Gretchen Howard (eight saves) and Victoria Kennedy (four saves) combined for the shutout in net.
Notre Dame (Hingham) 1, St. Mary?s 0The Spartans fired 32 shots on net but were unable to cash in. Sophomore Brittany McPherson made 25 saves for St. Mary?s (7-10), which is back at it tonight, at home, against Woburn (8:30).
