Boys Hockey: Winthrop’s fast start grounds Jets

February 9, 2015 by Matthew Roy

When you make mistakes against a talented team like Winthrop, there is usually a heavy price to pay on the scoreboard. The Lynn Jets learned that with a 5-3 loss Saturday at Larsen Arena.
Tied 1-1, the Jets (6-8-2) allowed four answered goals late in the first period.
?Against a team like Winthrop, you can’t expect to come back from four down,” Lynn coach Joe Conlon said.
Mike Norris scored first, giving Winthrop the lead, before Lynn?s Kyle Morrill tied the game. But Sean Gillis, Alex Anzuoni, Pat Todisco scored in front of another Norris goal to give Winthrop a 5-1 lead.
Lynn?s Mark Brazell scored early in the second period and Caleb Reddick scored late in the third to complete the scoring.
St. Mary?s 5, Archbishop Williams 1
Since starting the season at 0-4-2, the St. Mary’s boys’ hockey team has been on quite the roll lately. Dante Maribito had a hat trick in the win on Saturday Connery Rink and the Sparts clinched a tournament berth that didn?t look promising early in the season.
?We have a young team that just keeps getting better and better,” said St. Mary?s coach Mark Lee said. “We are a blue-collar team that needs to punch the clock and go to work every game and that’s what we’ve done lately.”
Maribito scored just 2:20 into the game, assisted by Eric Pedro and Mike Zampanti. Just over two minutes later, he struck again with a shorthanded goal.
Even more importantly, the Spartans were controlling the tempo despite having to kill three power plays in the first period. The Spartans found the early minutes of the second period just as profitable as the first as Mike Desmond made it 3-0 at the two-minute mark before Maribito completed his hat trick 3:05 later.
Pedro added an unassisted goal midway through the third before Williams’ Eric Keefe spoiled Ryan Borders’s shutout bid with 2:33 left as the Spartans improved to 9-2-1 in their last 12 games.
?We are starting to see a lot of chemistry with the team and they are playing pretty well,” Lee said. “And Dante has been a little snake-bit lately so it was nice to see him break out.”
Triton 5, Saugus 5
Defense wasn’t on the agenda in this one as the teams combined for six first -period goals. The Sachems had to settle for a point after letting a 5-3 lead slip away in the third period.
Brendan Ronan had a pair of goals for the Sachems, who also had a goal and an assist from Nik Straticos, Chris Sanderson and Brendan Patterson.
Joe Schickling had two goals for the Vikings, who netted goals four minutes apart in the third to salvage the tie.
Gloucester 4, Peabody 4
The Tanners (7-7-2) had to settle for a tie after seeing a two-goal third-period lead get away in the final six minutes.
Gloucester (9-5-3) led, 1-0, after the opening period on Jack Nicastro’s goal, assisted by Jared Favazza, before Peabody came alive in the second.
Jason Marshall and Reed Foster had power-play goals 44 seconds apart to give the Tanners the lead. Bobby Caproni and Chris Gillen then sandwiched tallies around a Favazza goal to make it 4-2 after the second period.
The Fishermen cut the lead to one on Alex Enes’s power-play goal at 7:58 of the third and then tied it in controversial fashion on Liam Lyons’s tally with 2:44 left as officials ruled that the tying goal was scored before the goal was knocked off its moorings on a scramble in front.
Lynnfield 5, Pentucket 0
The Pioneers (6-6-3) won for the fourth time in five games to get back to the .500 mark for the first time since the end of December. Dan Sullivan had a hat trick while Dan O’Leary had two goals and an assist.
Goalie Dave Langone recorded his second shutout in three games.
Lowell Catholic 1, Bishop Fenwick 1
The Crusaders (5-7-3) got a crucial point in their quest to make the Division 1 North playoffs for the first time. Mike Gallant finished off a Will Bethune pass midway through the second period to give Fenwick the lead. But the visitors scored early in the third period to tie the game. Bobby Lombardi made 24 st
