St. Mary?s (8-10) kept its hopes of making the state tournament alive with a 3-2 win over Woburn on Saturday at Connery Rink. Trailing, 2-1, with under five minutes left in the third period, Sam Callahan and Sarah Ryan scored 1:21 apart to give St. Mary’s the win on senior night.
?We really got outplayed for two periods. The fortunate thing is that we were only down a goal,” St. Mary’s coach Frank Pagliuca said. “But that third period was one of the best we’ve had all year.”
Woburn led, 1-0, on Erica Lissner’s goal late in the first period before Callahan went end to end and tied the game on her 14thgoal of the season early in the second period. The Tanners took the lead back two minutes later.
It stayed 2-1 until Callahan asserted her self again. She was robbed once on a breakaway but moments later took a Vanessa VanBuskirk pass and scored on another breakaway.
Moments later, Ryan fired a shot through a screen to score the winner.
Bishop Fenwick 3, Matignon 1
With the win on Sunday, Fenwick clinched its first-ever tournament berth.
?It was very emotional at the end,” said Fenwick coach Doug Anderson. “I am so elated for all of the girls and what they’ve accomplished. We made history.”
It was also senior day for the Crusaders (9-7-2) as they honored a class that featured some players who had never played hockey before coming to the school.
?Those (players) are a big part of this,” Anderson said.
Fenwick turned to its mix of youth and experience to get the win on Sunday.
Freshman Aly Giguere gave Fenwick a 1-0 lead, assisted by Megan and Caitlin Carney, with 4:39 left in the first period but the Warriors tied the game 75 seconds later.
It stayed tied until midway through the second period when freshman Amanda Blanchette netted the go-ahead goal, assisted by Caitlin Carney and Maggie Clark.
Taylor Farrin finally allowed the Crusaders to begin to celebrate with 2:52 left in the game when she backhanded home an insurance goal, assisted by Nicole Muir and Caitlin Carney.
?All the perseverance for these girls has paid off,” Anderson said. “This is the most rewarding year I’ve had (since coaching Swampscott back in the 1980s). We knew this game was huge and its just unbelievable.”
Beverly 5, Masconomet 2
The Panthers (9-4-1) got two goals each from Izzy Primack and McKinley Karpa in their win on Sunday to set up a winner-take-all showdown for the Northeastern Hockey League title on Tuesday against the Lynn/Saugus/Winthrop squad.
Beverly 4, Marblehead 1
On Saturday, the Panthers beat Marblehead. Karpa and Kristen McCarthy each had a goal and an assist in the third period.Beverly led, 1-0, after the first period on a goal from Primack before teammate Caitlin McBride. The Magicians (5-7-3) got a second-period goal from Emmarose Winder. Marblehead’s Aly Hopkins made 44 saves in her strongest outing of the season while Beverly goalies Kyra Wolonsovich and Madison Jalbert finished with five saves each
