Navigators ink Cassidy, Hovey to play this summer

Joe Gill

February 10, 2015 by Joe Gill

The North Shore Navigators continued their busy off season Monday as they announced they have signed a pair of pitchers from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Tim Cassidy and Scott Hovey will look to bolster the pitching staff as the Navigators strive to return to the FCBL playoff picture. The announcement comes just days after the Navigators announced that John Zizzo will be the next manager of the team.
?We are definitely excited to see what both Tim and Scott will bring to the table,” said General Manager Bill Terlecky. “They come from a great UMass program and I think they will be positive additions to our team.”
Cassidy is no stranger to Fraser Field as the Swampscott native made a brief stint with the Navigators back in 2012. Cassidy was part of a Navigators team that made it to the FCBL Championship before eventually falling to the Nashua Silver Knights. During that season, Cassidy pitched in twelve games for the Navs and finished with a 2-2 record. Last season, Cassidy, who is a red-shirt junior, pitched in eight games for the Minutemen going 0-1 keeping opposing hitters to a .298 average.
Hovey, a Danvers native, is a young prospect who should contribute greatly to the overall success of the Navigators. Although he is entering his freshman season at UMass, Hovey had an outstanding career at Salisbury School that should translate well to the collegiate level. As a pitcher Hoveyposted a miniscule 2.79 ERA while striking out 15 hitters in 11 innings. As impressive as he is on the mound, he is equally as impressive at the plate as he holds the Danvers school record for doubles with 28. To cap his accomplishments, Hovey has won two Western New England Prep Baseball League Championships at Salisbury and three Northeast Conference Championships at Danvers. The Navigators open up their 2015 home slate as they play host to the Seacoast Mavericks on Saturday June 6th. Individual game tickets and group tickets are now on sale. For more information call781-595-9400.
