The Harvard Crimson handed Boston College its first loss of the season Tuesday, pulling out a hard-fought 3-2 victory in the Beanpot Championship game.
The Eagles had won 25 straight games coming into Tuesday?s championship match, scoring an average of over five goals per game. They had also beaten the Crimson, 10-4, earlier in the season, and it seems to have kicked Harvard into gear. With tonight?s win included, the Crimson have gone 17-2 since the loss to the Eagles.
There was great goaltending on both sides of this game. Lynn?s Katie Burt finished with 12 saves for BC. But the star of the night was Harvard?s Emerance Maschmeyer, who finished with 30 saves in the game and took home Beanpot MVP honors.
The Eagles came out hot in the first period, outshooting Harvard 8-0 in the first half of the period. Boston College struck first on Andie Anastos? 10th goal of the season.
Burt started off the game well with three saves in the first period. She let the first goal in however, scored by the Crimson?s Mary Parker on a rebound.
The score was tied at 1-1 after one period.
The second period saw plenty of action and physical play from both sides. Each team had two power plays, with the Eagles going 0-2 and Harvard going 1-2.
Burt continued to play well in the first half of the period. She made two beautiful glove saves to rob Harvard of two scoring chances.
Haley Skarupa scored her 25th goal of the year to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead nine minutes into the second, but the Crimson responded with two big goals of their own to retake the lead.
Karly Heffernan cashed in on a beautiful centering pass from Marblehead native Lexie Laing to tie the score. Heffernan took the pass and deked right past Burt for a spectacular goal.
The next Crimson goal came on the power play for a five-minute body-checking penalty on Alex Carpenter. Miye D?Oench took a feed from Parker and beat Burt to give Harvard a one goal lead.
The Eagles were able to kill of the rest of the major, but they still trailed, 3-2, going into the final period.
It was the first time all season the Eagles trailed entering the third period. They came out firing with several great scoring chances, but each one was sent away by Harvard?s Maschmeyer.
On the Eagles? next powerplay opportunity, Skarupa came close to trying the score but clanked it off the post. BC had a couple more chances, but still couldn?t cash in on the power play.
Boston College pulled Burt with about 50 seconds left in the game for the extra attacker, and it almost worked. There was a mad scramble for the puck after a shot from the point, but the end result was an unfortunate penalty on BC?s Lexi Bender.
That sealed it for the Crimson as they skated to their 14th Beanpot Championship.
Boston University 3, Northeastern 1

Marie-Philip Poulin had two goals for Boston University (19-7-2), with the third coming from Kayla Tutino.
Hayley Masters scored the lone goal for Northeastern (9-15-4). Goalie Sarah Foss, a St. Mary’s graduate, had a career-high 38 saves in the loss.
