Caroline McKinnon scored the 100thpoint of her high school career for the Lynn/Saugus/Winthrop girls? hockey team. But the Bulldogs had to settle for a 1-1 tie with host Peabody on Wednesday at McVann-O?Keefe Rink.
McKinnon, a senior center, reached the milestone just 32 seconds into the game when she cleaned up a rebound at the top of the crease, following a shot from Kasey Harris at the point.
?It definitely takes off some of the pressure for me personally but it would have been nice to reach it in a win,” said McKinnon, who, although thrilled with the feat, has her eye on a team goal, set at the beginning of the season.
?We?re looking to win the Northeastern Conference (tonight) against Beverly,” she explained. “We?ve had a great season so far and I really think we have a chance to make a deep run in the state tournament.”
Consecutive 30-point seasons as a sophomore and a junior left the Bulldogs? (10-3-1) two-year captain just 19 points shy of the mark entering her final season.
McKinnon made sure to deflect much of the credit to her linemates and coach as well.
?I?ve played with some great players over the past five years, including Flora English and Annie Mahoney this season,” she explained. “Coach (Anthony ?Butch? Martucci) has helped me so much along the way. I really cannot thank everyone of them enough.”
Martucci was pleased for McKinnon?s accomplishment.
?(McKinnon?s) progress since her first season with the program has been unbelievable,” he said. “She?s made full-scale changes to her game and has developed into an extremely reliable player in all three zones. I couldn?t be any more proud of her.”
Peabody?s Elise Murphy made sure McKinnon?s historic tally wouldn?t also prove to be the game winner for the Bulldogs, though. Murphy notched the equalizer with just 49 seconds remaining in regulation. Lauren Hennessey made 45 saves for the Tanners (2-12-3).
St. Mary?s 7, Fontbonne Academy 2
Samantha Callahan tallied four times for the host Spartans who scored five unanswered goals in the third period. Katie Terban, Maggie Flaherty and Ashley Wojewodzic added finishes while Sarah Ryan had two assists for St. Mary?s (9-10). With three games remaining, the Spartans need four more points to clinch a spot in the postseason.
?I have to give our girls a lot of credit for digging down deep in the third period,” said Spartans coach Frank Pagliuca. “But credit Fontbonne for really taking it to us in the second period.”
Marblehead 9, Fenwick 0
Hat tricks from Brooke Keough (two assists) and Sydney Cresta paced a furious offensive attack for the Magicians who landed 40 shots on net. Marblehead (6-7-3) got solo tallies from Codi Butt (assist), Emmarose Winder and Hadley Woodfin (assist) in the win.The Crusaders mustered just four shots on Aly Hopkins (three saves) and Sarah Ryan (one) who combined for the shutout.
