February 16, 2015 by Matthew Roy

Early in the second period on Saturday Swampscott appeared to be on its way to getting a win over archrival Marblehead, keeping its playoff hopes alive. But the Magicians had other ideas as they scored three times in the final 8:30 of the second period, two of them coming in the final minute, and then added a goal in the third to take a 6-2 win over the Big Blue.?We talked about it before the game with the kids, that Swampscott was coming in needing to win this game,” Marblehead coach Bob Jackson said. “And they had the momentum there for a while when they tied the game. We had to weather the storm and then we started playing with more urgency.”Marblehead (11-5-1) came out of the gates charging as they dominated the first period. Tim Kalinowski scored just 2:32 in, assisted by Cam McDonald and Braden Haley, for a 1-0 Marblehead lead. Just over two minutes later, Colin Daly gave the Magicians a 2-0 lead. Marblehead carried that lead into the second period before the Big Blue (7-11) turned the momentum in a matter of seconds.Steve Dandreo got Swampscott on the board at 3:13, assisted by Stevie Santanello. On the next shift, Ryan Donnelly tied the game when he finished off a pass from Mike Johnson.?Swampscott really had the momentum in the second period and if not for a couple of nice saves by (Mark) Scribner, they could have taken the lead,” Jackson said.Marblehead?s first line restored the Marblehead lead at 6:23 as Haley was set up by Kalinowski and Bryan Cohn for a 3-2 lead. Then came the game?s defining sequence.Haley struck again with 29 seconds left in the period to give his team a 4-2 lead. On the next shift, Kalinowski scored the Headers second goal in 12 seconds to make it 5-2 entering the second intermission.?That really was a backbreaker,” Jackson said of the last minute of the second. “It would have been a completely different game if we hadn?t gotten those goals.”Danny Gienieszcko put the finishing touches on the victory when he scored at 9:50 of the third.Latin Academy 4, Lynn 3The Jets (6-10-2) overcame 2-0 and 3-2 deficits but it wasn?t enough as the Dragons scored five minutes into the third period to take the win.?It was an unacceptable effort,” said a blunt Jets coach Joe Conlon. “There have been too many nights like that this season.”Lynn trailed 2-0 in the second period before Corey Wojewodzic and Jon Kosmas scored to tie the game. Latin Academy took the lead back early in the third but Mike Clougherty tied it with 9:30 left. But it took only 27 seconds for the Dragons to respond with the go-ahead goal.St. John?s Prep 6, Catholic Memorial 0The Eagles (13-5-1) made a major statement toward their inclusion in the Division 1A tournament with a stunning victory over the Knights in the Derek Hines Memorial Game at Ristuccia Arena in Wilmington.Kyle Lynch had a pair of goals to lead St. John?s, which also got contributions from Billy Falter (goal, assist), Tyler Scearbo (goal, assist), Kyle Hentosh (goal, assist) and Nick Latham (goal). Before the game, St. John?s presented Sue and Steven Hines, the parents of Derek Hines, with a check for $9,300 to the 1st Lt. Derek Hines Fund, which provides financial assistance for Massachusetts families of soldiers who have serious, career-ending and life-altering injuries. Hines was a 1999 graduate of St. John?s who was killed in action in Afghanistan on Sept. 1, 2005.Winthrop 3, Shawsheen 2The Vikings (15-2-2) continued to announce their presence as a contender in the upcoming Division 2 North tournament with the win over the Rams. Winthrop trailed, 1-0, in the second period before Charlie Page scored a pair of goals to give his team the lead.Shawsheen tied the game later in the second before Pat Todisco netted the go-ahead goal with 2:00 left in the third period.North Middlesex 1, Bishop Fenwick 0The Crusaders (4-9-1) put up a battle against a North Middlesex team that has now won 28 consecutive games.
