School Roundup: Lynnfield wrestlers make it a three-peat

February 16, 2015 by Matthew Roy

The Lynnfield/North Reading wrestlers made it a three-peat as they claimed a third straight Division 3 North sectional title in dramatic fashion, coming from behind in the final matches to score 206.50 points, nine better than second place Melrose, on Saturday at North Reading High.
Northeastern Conference champion Danvers finished third with 172.5 points. Saugus was eighth (111.5) and Marblehead/Swampscott was 12th(25).
Entering the championship round in all weight classes, L/NR was a half point behind Melrose and had four wrestlers ? Max Whyman, Dom Monzione, Brandon Troisi and Joe Morse ? in title bouts.
Melrose, meanwhile, had three wrestlers in the finals and halfway through the last round was clinging to a scant lead.
Monzione swung the tide in favor of L/NR when he defeated Triton?s Louis L?Heureux by a fall in the third round to give his team the lead. That win forced Melrose?s hand and when they failed to win in their final two matches, the title once again belonged to the hosts.
How good was L/NR in the finals? Whyman took a 4-3 decision in the 126-pound class and Troisi closed things out in style with a 4-3 win over Saugus? Nick Vokey at 285-pounds.
The Sachems had several other outstanding performances, led by Seth Roy?s championship at 160 pounds in which he won two of three matches by fall before a win, 11-6, in the finals.
Luke Surrette finished runner-up in the 220-pound class while Mike Titus was third at 106 pounds for the Sachems.
Danvers got a win at 138 pounds from NEC MVP Chris Behen, who outscored his opponents 30-2 on the way to the title. Teammate Colby Holland also was a winner in the 113-pound class, defeating Morse, 7-0. Quintin Holland was third at 152 pounds.
Marblehead/Swampscott got a fifth place from Stephen Hopkins at 120 pounds.

Beverly, Marblehead excel at state finals
They were the top dogs in the Northeastern Conference all season and on Saturday at MIT?s Zesiger Center the Panthers and Magicians shined on the state?s biggest stage.
Beverly had the Division 1 state title within its grasp as it carried a four-point lead into the meet?s final event ? the 400-meter freestyle relay. The Panthers finished second in the final event but Lincoln-Sudbury came home first to earn 40 points to Beverly?s 34 and a 223-221 win in the final standings.
The Panthers got off to a fast start by winning the 200-meter medley relay in 1 minute, 49.41 seconds. Sarah Welch then added a second place in the 200-meter freestyle (1:53.86) before Astrid Swenson (56.19) and Rachel Grant (57.25) went 1-2 in the 100-meter butterfly.
Nicole Welch took third in the 500 freestyle (5:12.22) before Swenson won again in the 100 backstroke (57.07) to give the Panthers a healthy lead. But L-S scored big points in the 100 breaststroke and diving events before winning the final relay to take the title.
Marblehead was behind the Dual County League?s Wayland (300) and Weston (242) as it finished third with 211 points despite having only five competitors.
Leading the way for coach Sue Guertin?s team was Kylie Cronin, who won the 50 freestyle (24.27) and repeated her state title in the 100 butterfly (55.26). Ellie Ronan won the 100 backstroke (57.81) and added a third place in the 200-meter indiviudal medley (2:09.02).
