With its regular season coming to an end, the Marblehead boys? hockey team figured the best way to prepare for the postseason is by winning the the Newburyport Bank Classic.
On Monday evening at Henry Graf Skating Rink, the Magicians took their first step toward a Gulazian Division crown with a 2-1 victory over Haverhill.
Braden Haley?s team-leading 18th goal, assisted by Tim Kalinowski and P.J. Roy, at the 12:09 mark of the second period preceded the go-ahead goal, off the stick of Colin Daly with 1:43 remaining in the frame.
Dan Gienieczko and Aidan Gillis (first varsity point) recorded assists on the second goal.
?We came out strong and played very well in the first two periods,” said Marblehead coach Bob Jackson, who lauded goalie Mark Scribner?s 26 saves in the win.
?He made all of the big saves when he had to tonight,” Jackson said. “This was his best game of the year.”
Scribner?s bid for a shutout was broken by Josh Goldstein with just under three minutes to go in the final frame.
Haverhill?s Mike Gleason, was fantastic in his own right, turning aside 37 shots.
With the win, the Magicians (12-5-1) earned a meeting with Pentucket on Wednesday in the tournament?s championship game.
In other tournament action, Danvers (11-7-2) was upended, 2-0, by Andover, which advances to the championship of the Bresnahan Division, to play Newburyport. The Falcons will conclude their regular season with the consolation game against Triton on Thursday.

Salem 4, Everett 3
Derek Zwiercan scored with six minutes remaining in regulation to propel the Witches past the host Crimson Tide and into the championship game of the Malloy Tournament.
Sam Petri and Jake Stahlman tallied for Salem (10-5-2) in the opening 15 minutes before Mike Gillis, from Cam Twoomey, added a goal in the middle frame.
St. John?s Prep 5, St. John?s (Shrewsbury) 1
Captain Teddy McNamara tallied twice for the visiting Eagles who improved to 13-5-1.
Billy Falter, Sam Stone and Nick Latham added goals for the Prep.
Revere 2, Medford 2
Goaltender Maxx Anderson made 50 saves for the Patriots who earned a hard-fought point after Anthony Cecca banged home a loose puck in the crease, early in the third period. Revere (2-14-3) led 1-0 after the first period on a goal from Richie Polignone before the host Mustangs scored twice in the middle frame.GIRLS
Beverly/Danvers 4, Wakefield 0
McKinley Karpa continued her dominant season Monday afternoon on the road against Wakefield. The sophomore netted a hat trick for the Panthers, bringing her point total for the season to 39, with 23 goals and 16 assists.
Anna O?Neil was a total playmaker for the Panthers (12-4-1), notching three assists to give her a total of 24 for the season. Kristen McCarthy added the final goal and also two more assists, bringing her totals to 16 goals and 12 assists this year.
Belmont 6, Lynn/Saugus/Winthrop 2The Bulldogs (10-6-1) were overwhelmed by Belmont in the Watertown Tournament.
