DeOssie tackles guest speaker roleThe Saugus Business Partnership, founded in 2003 to build a stronger Saugus community for residents and businesses, hosted its quarterly meeting on Feb. 17, featuring guest speaker Steve DeOssie.DeOssie is a former Boston College and New England Patriots linebacker. DeOssie played high school football at the now-defunct Don Bosco Technical High School in Boston and was selected to play in the Agganis All-Star football game in 1980. He helped BC reach its first bowl game in 41 years and finished with a team record of more than 400 career tackles. In addition to the Patriots, he later played for the Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets and New York Giants, and celebrated a Super Bowl win with the Giants in 1991. He now hosts “The New England Tailgate Show,” which airs on Comcast Sports Net New England and works as the Patriots and NFL analyst for the Fox25 Morning Show and WHDH TV.Michelman leads Peabody Chamber Ferrin awards listThe Peabody Area Chamber of Commerce is showering awards on local business leaders and institutions in advance of its April 7 Ferrin Community Service Award ceremony in City Hall.The 22-year-old award goes this year to Selma Michelman, who has been an advocate for more than 50 years for people with disabilities. According to a Chamber statement, Michelman is a longtime volunteer who serves on the state Developmental Services Department advisory board. She volunteers with the Progeria Research Foundation and is active in Temple Beth Shalom, the statement said.In addition to Michelman, the chamber is honoring Pump It Up Peabody owner Amy Maguire with the Desire King Award for Maguire’s success in making her 10-year-old business a model for other companies. Pump It Up works with Autism Speaks and Sensory Jump Time to assist autistic children and their siblings.Kathy Delomba, owner of Mr. G’s Pizza and Subs, will receive a chamber Community Spirit Award along with Jim Nentwig. He founded Santa’s Magic 33 years ago and Delomba is being honored for instilling responsibility in high school students she hires.The chamber will also honor Eastern Bank “for demonstrating a high standard of excellence in business leadership.”Let’s not keep this show on the roadKudos to the police officers who kept traffic moving through Central Square Wednesday morning with a gentle suggestion to some residents in the street.”I’m sure this conversation would be better held off the street,” an officer announced over the loudspeaker from his cruiser, second in a line of cars waiting for three pedestrians to finish crossing the street.Also, a thanks to the pedestrians, who quickly moved and had all five fingers extended when raising a hand in response.”Sorry!” One man shouted as he passed by the cruiser.
