Lowell Catholic ends Jets postseason early

February 25, 2015 by Mike Alongi

STONEHAM – The Lynn Jets came out fast Tuesday night at Stoneham Arena, but they ultimately didn?t have enough firepower to get past the higher-seeded Lowell Catholic team in the first round of the MIAA Division 3 North tournament, falling 6-1. The Jets tried to establish their physicality early on, but the Crusaders just proved to be too fast for them. When Lynn tried to skate with the Crusaders it made mistakes that led to easy opportunities for Lowell Catholic.
?We lost defensive coverage in the high slot a few times,” Jets? head coach Joe Conlon said. “Our problem this year has been letting things snowball when they get a little out of hand.”
Lowell Catholic was flying all over the ice from the opening faceoff. It bombarded Jets? goaltender Jack Stafford with shots and got several good chances on the break.
With just under 11 minutes gone in the first period, Lowell Catholic?s Dylan Poirier won a faceoff back to senior forward Jesse Caisse, who snapped a wrist shot over Stafford?s shoulder to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
It didn?t take long for the Jets to strike back. Less than two minutes into the second period, senior Owen Sedille took the puck out of the corner and sent a beautiful outlet pass to a streaking Brett Molea, who took the puck up the left side, got in alone for a one-on-one with the Crusaders? goalie, deked to the backhand and put it top shelf to tie the score at 1-1.
But, then the wheels fell off. It started with a missed defensive assignment that led to Caisse?s second goal. He took an outlet pass from Sean Sullivan and buried it in the back of the net to give Lowell Catholic the lead. Forty-five seconds later, senior captain Michael Guay threw one in from the high slot to extend the lead to 3-1. Just over 30 seconds after that, Thomas Willegal broke it wide open with another goal for Lowell Catholic. Three goals in just under a minute and a half.
The Jets didn?t have much of an answer after that. They tried to get something going in the third period, but they just couldn?t put the puck in the net. At the same time, the Crusaders continued to keep the puck in Lynn?s zone, putting shots on net. Two of those shots found paydirt, with Guay scoring his second goal of the game and Shane Silva adding the final dagger.
Despite the big loss, Conlon wasn?t too upset with his team after the game.?I certainly don?t question our effort tonight,” he said. “We competed hard all night. That?s a really good team we played, and you can?t play from behind against a team like that.”
