The Winthrop boys? hockey team got a great all-around team effort as beat St. Bernard?s, 4-0, to advance to the MIAA Division 2 North quarterfinals. Winthrop struck early and often, with Steve Holgerson getting things started in the first period. Mike Norris and Sean Gillis assisted. Norris scored in the second period off a Holgerson assist to give the Vikings the 2-0 lead.
Patrick Todisco scored the next goal on assists from Charlie Page and Alex Anzuoni, and Henry Brooks scored the final goal, also assisted by Page.
?I don?t think we played our best tonight,” Winthrop head coach Dale Dunbar said. “But we won and that?s all that matters this time of year.”
The Vikings will take on the Haverhill on Saturday in the quarterfinal game.
Peabody 5, Danvers 4 (OT)
The Tanners (10-8-2) made their first tournament game in three years memorable as senior Reed Foster scored a power-play goal 48 seconds into overtime to upset the No. 7 Falcons in the opening round of the Division 2 North tournament.
?It was nice to see Reed get the goal,” Peabody coach Mark Leonard said. “He is the heart and soul of this team so it?s special to see him get it.”
Peabody had lost to the Falcons twice in the regular season and trailed 1-0 after one period on Wednesday. Each team scored twice in the second period before a frantic third period began.
Danvers took the lead 38 seconds in on Ryan Buchanan?s goal before Peabody?s Chris Gillen tied it on the next shift. J.T. Eason?s second goal of the game with 7:58 to go gave the Tanners a 4-3 lead.
The Falcons rallied back and forced overtime when Connor Purtell scored on a scramble in front of Aaron McDonnell?s net at 11:56.
In overtime, the Tanners got a power play right off the bat and wasted little time ending it as Foster ripped a high shot past Danvers? Alex Taylor.
Peabody will face No. 2 seed North Reading, a 5-0 winner over Boston Latin, in the quarterfinals on Saturday at a time to be determined in Woburn.Concord-Carlisle 2, Gloucester 1
The Fishermen fell just short against Concord-Carlisle in Wednesday?s MIAA Division 2 North tournament first-round game. The loss drops Gloucester to 10-7-4 to finish the season.
The Fishermen struck first early in the opening period. Sal Costanzo put one home on the power play on assists from Jared Favazza and Alex Enes just over a minute into the first.
Unfortunately that was all that Gloucester could muster. Concord-Carlisle struck back with two quick goals to finish the first period and held the lead for the remainder of the game.

Lincoln-Sudbury 6, Marblehead 2
The Magicians (9-8-4) were eliminated in the preliminary round of the Division 1 tournament after using a late-season three-game win streak to claim a tournament berth. Marblehead was without coach Emily Hudak-Reis, who gave birth to her first child on Tuesday.

Beverly 56, Salem 46The ninth-seeded Panthers pulled off a slight upset of eighth-seeded Salem Wednesday night in the first round of the MIAA Division 1 North tournament. Beverly will now await the winner of Arlington and No. 1-ranked Woburn on Saturday.
