Winthrop beat North Reading, 51-33, in their Division 3 North quarterfinal matchup Friday night. Kristen Siscamanis finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the No.2 Vikings (18-3) past the No.7 Hornets in a Division 3 North quarterfinal matchup.
?We switched to full-court, man-to-man defensive coverage at the start of the second half and it really turned the tides,” said Winthrop coach Ignacio Oyola. “The girls were able to generate a lot of turnovers and turn an eight-point lead into a 20-point lead in under three minutes.”
Niki Tsiotos tacked on 10 points in the Vikings? win, which sets up a semifinals showdown with No. 3 St. Mary?s on Tuesday at Essex Tech (7), a rematch of last season?s sectional final.
BOYS? BASKETBALL
St. John’s 59, East Boston 58
The Eagles never trailed in this Division 1 North quarterfinal matchup with East Boston, but it still came down to the wire. St. John?s (17-4) held a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter before East Boston went on a run to bring the game to within one point. But the Eagles were able to hold them off and get a victory.
?It was a hard fought game,” Eagles? coach John Dullea said. “We definitely grinded this one out.”
Ben Judson was the Eagles? leading scorer with 17 points, including two big free throws with less than 10 seconds left to seal the win. Spencer Danforth was right behind him with 16.
The win places St. John?s in a matchup against Everett on Tuesday in the Division 1 North semifinals at Beverly Fieldhouse.
Danvers 69, Wakefield 52
Coach John Walsh picked up the 100th victory of his career as the top-seeded Falcons cruised to a win over the No.17 Warriors in the first round of the Division 2 North tournament.
Devonn Allen scored a game-high 23 points for Danvers (22-0) which had three others score in double-figures: Rashad Francois (12), Devan Harris (11) and Vinny Clifford (10).
The Falcons will host Latin Academy in the quarterfinals on Monday (7).
Arlington 63, Marblehead 41
The Magicians? tournament run ended Friday with a tough 22-point loss to Arlington. Marblehead came into the game a little banged up, according to coach Mike Giardi, but they started the game off well. But the Magicians gave up 25 points in the second quarter alone, and it spelled doom for them.
?Their pressure eventually got to us,” Giardi said. “We had a hard time getting the ball into the post.”
Point guard Spencer Craig led the Magicians with nine points on the night, while Teddy Bostley contributed eight points.
The Magicians finish the season with an even 11-11 record. Although they are graduating seven seniors this year, Giardi believes there?s plenty to build on.
?We?ve got a lot of good young players,” he said. “Hopefully they learn from this loss.”
Greater Lawrence 73, Saugus 65
The Sachems came up just short against number-one seeded Greater Lawrence in the Division 3 North quarterfinals on Friday night, but assistant coach Mark Bertrand was proud of Saugus? efforts.
?We played so hard tonight,” he said. “They?re the number one seed and we fought them to the end.”
The Sachems were led by Dan Cacciola, who scored 25 points. Kye Autilio and Lamarr Jones were the other two Sachems in double figures, with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Ronnie Rajeh added nine points for the Sachems.
The loss leaves Saugus? record for the year at 10-12.
Tewksbury 62, Gloucester 59
The No.14 Fishermen?s season came to an end in the first round of the Division 2 North tournament, at the hands of the third-seeded Redmen.
Gloucester (12-10) got a big performance from junior John Philpott, who finished with 26 points and 15 rebounds.
Nate Tenaglia scored nine of his team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter for Tewksbury who advances to host Belmont in the quarterfinals.
