The Boston College women?s hockey team, backstopped by Lynn?s Katie Burt, might be the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, but the Eagles won?t be carrying a Hockey East tournament championship into the NCAA tournament.
Boston University broke a 1-1 tie with three third-period goals as the Terriers, led by tournament MVP Marie-Philip Poulin, claimed the Bertagna Trophy with a 4-1 victory over BC on Sunday at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center.
Poulin scored six goals in four playoff games, including two in the final on Sunday, to be a unanimous choice for MVP.
The loss was costly in more ways than one as it kept BC from being named the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament when the pairings were announced on Sunday night.
The Eagles were given the No. 2 spot by the selection committee behind Minnesota. BC will face defending national champion Clarkson this weekend at Conte Forum in the NCAA quarterfinals. One of Minnesota?s assistant coaches is Danvers? Meghan Duggan.
Harvard, which gave BC its other loss during the regular season in the Beanpot finals, is the No. 3 seed and will host Quinnipiac in the quarterfinal round. Marblehead?s Lexi and Brianna Laing are members of the Crimson.
The Eagles never led on Sunday thanks to Poulin, a two-time Olympic gold medalist with Team USA.
She staked the Terriers to a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game when she slid a Sarah LeFort pass by Burt at 4:56.
BU continued to swarm around Burt?s net for most of the period, twice hitting posts and then watching LeFort redirect a Poulin shot just wide of the net.
The Eagles took control in the second period and were finally able to tie the game at 6:35. Emily Pfalzer kept the puck in the BU zone and snapped a quick pass to Alex Carpenter, who tipped her 35th goal of the season home.
It was still tied in the third period when Poulin scored her second of the game following numerous chances for the Eagles at the other end of the ice.
Emily Field nearly tied the game shorthanded for BC midway through the third. On the same power play, BU made it a 3-1 lead when Maddie Elia cut to the net and chipped a backhand stick side past Burt.BU closed things out with 84 seconds left on LeFort?s empty-net tally set up by a hustling Poulin.
