SAUGUS – Police arrested two men after responding to a burglary and finding them hiding inside a vacant home. The home belonged to the late father of one of the suspects.”The fact that neither (suspect) had a key to the residence and the fact that both individuals hid on us when we arrived on scene led us to conclude that they knew full well that they did not belong on the property,” Saugus Police Officer William Cash said in a department announcement.Paul Ryan, 40, of Melrose, and David Vickers, 38, of Saugus, were arrested and each charged with nighttime felony breaking and entering.Police said a resident called officers shortly before 10 a.m. Friday and reported that an alarm was going off at a vacant house on Walden Pond Avenue. The caller told police she was the executor of the estate of the home’s late owner and that she heard noises coming from the kitchen when she went inside the house. The caller told police nobody was supposed to be inside the building, police said.Police quickly responded to the scene and called for anyone inside the home to come out. Nobody did; and officers went inside and found Ryan, and then Vickers, police reported. The home belonged to Vickers’ father, who recently passed away, police said.”Not all cases are black and white, and in this situation the officers did their best in a difficult situation,” Assistant Chief Ronald Giorgetti said. “This is an example of good police work.”Ryan and Vickers are expected to be arraigned today in Lynn District Court.
